Economics through distance learning

Would anyone have any suggestions for a basic economics diploma to be done via distance learning?

I'm interested in the subject but it was never offered in my school so I'd be coming at it from scratch.
Can a diploma or post-grad diploma be done through distance learning or part time and if so, does anyone have any suggestions?

The H.Dips in economic science in Irish universities like NUIM and UCC only seem to be on offer full time so they woudn't really appeal to me (time constraints). The Independant College diploma is only 10 weeks which seems much too short to get a proper grasp of the problems.

Have you checked the Open University?

Most courses are offered both part and full time. This H.Dip at UCC is offered part time. A lot of courses are offered both part and full time. I'd give the department a call and ask if the course you are interested in is offered part time and they might accommodate you if the course is not already offered part time.

I did this over two years (2 x 6 month modules):
    Diploma in Economics

It's a pretty good grounding in economics, not too taxing.

You could also consider studying with the university of london external system. They have a degree in economics and several joint degrees in economics with subjects such as finance. I'm hoping to start economics with them next year and i've heard its an excellent course but quite challenging.
They seem to have about 15 to 20 seperate courses in economics and you do 12 for your BSc degree. Also have the option to do a post graduate diploma with them i think. I suppose you could also sign up for a degree and just do the courses you want and not complete the degree if you wanted. They are cheaper than the open university as well which is a bonus but you get less academic support.

I'm doing the Uni of London MSC in economics, in 1st year so haven't specialised yet. The term runs from Feb to Oct and you do the exams in Dublin. It's excellent but it's completely distance i.e. no interaction with other students other than online fora if that's an issue for you. I must say I'm enjoying it - there's the option of just doing individual modules, stopping after the postgrad cert or going after the Masters so it is flexible. I'm with the School of Oriental and African Studies (SOAS) because I've an interest in development but there may be others of direct interest.
