Hedging for exposed area

Does anyone have any idea as to what hedging is the best to get for an area which is very exposed in wind and rain? We tried griselenia last spring but most of it seems to have died off over the winter, so I think we need something than can withstand the wind and rain better.

It might help if you could give some more info on the actual site - is it coastal, inland, elevated, N,S, E, W facing etc etc
Also you say it is windy and wet but is the soil itself heavy and wet or does it drain fairly quickly?
Is the soil shallow, acid/alkaline etc?
Any info would help people advise you better. :)
