I recieved one yesterday, warning of diconnection for apparently downloading over 218gb worth of stuff in February "in the interest of providing our other customers with a high quality service" (it their network was any good in the first place this wouldn't be an issue!)...

Now I would dispute that figure personnally... the router is secure, no odd connections... no trojans etc.

Anyone else get one of these?

    218gb ???

What in gods name are you downloading?
Whatever it is - at that rate your going to draw some serious attention upon yourself!

If you need broadband monitors to keep an eye on your downloads in future, you will get some here: http://unitedpeople.ie/free.html

Every broadband plan you are with has a fair usage policy.

Im not too sure how much UPC's one is but the Vodafone one is 250GB if on the 24mb package

    surely that cant be right?
http://www.upc.ie/broadband/ ... the first package has a 120gb usage limit. The other two packages say unlimited. They cant just turn around (on the highest package) and say you're "downloading too much" right?

    This "unlimited" is a misconception.

They do allow you do continue downloading - they just reduce the speed at which you can!
They can still claim that for the lower speed - you still can download and access the net - so any claim that they have cut you off cannot apply.

Just upgrade your package, think I'm paying €40 for a 20mb line with 250gb allowance. Much cheaper than any of the other providers and their service is brilliant compared to Vodafone or Eircom.

    never!

We got one a few weeks ago. Rang them up to dispute it as we hadn't been downloading anything. We ended up getting upgraded from 6mB to 20mB after threatening to suspend our package. Result!!

    Always read the fine print.

    Read Section 3

    that is bleeding terrible!!!
false advertisment or what. if something is stated "umlimited" it should be just that.

But lets look at it. Those unlimited packes are 20mb and 30mb lines. You just know people who order those packages are doing so to tackle the big files (blue rays? ps3 games? etc) so whats the point of having such a fast line if you cant even properly use it?

I was going to download a 88gb file

Think i might leave it for now

Maybe change your router password just in case.

Broadband regulations in this country are a joke alright.

If something is advertised as unlimited then it should not be limited. It is saying one thing and doing another.

Also the fact that such a small percentage of people get the advertised download speeds.

IMO the average user speed should be advertised. I think the average speed of a 24mb connection is 8mb.
Regulators are either asleep or corrupt.
