Buddy of mine changed from Eircom to UPC recently. He was supposed to be getting 30mb download, but any time he checked on speedtest.net he wasn't getting any more than about 2. On top of that the connection was extremely poor and often disconnected for no reason.
Whenever he went to check the download speed on UPC's site, it told him he was getting about 27mb. Not sure if he's had it fixed since, but it was an absolute joke!

I recieved one yesterday, warning of diconnection for apparently downloading over 218gb worth of stuff in February "in the interest of providing our other customers with a high quality service" (it their network was any good in the first place this wouldn't be an issue!)...

It's not just the download figure they consider, it's uploads too.

So if you are downloading torrents of say 50Gb, and leave your machine on, you could end up uploading 50Gb on top of that = 100Gb.

I got one once. The first month I had UPC installed in my place, I went a bit nuts and TV shows are BIG. I did around 300GB.

    the router is secure

How can you be sure of that? Change your passwords. What encryption type are you using?

What in the name of God could you be downloading that is 88GB? I bet it's MB. Or 8.8GB. Are you new to this whole internet thing?

Tell him to use the Dublin one. I think that's the only one for Ireland that actually works well.

false advertisment or what. if something is stated "umlimited" it should be just that.

But lets look at it. Those unlimited packes are 20mb and 30mb lines. You just know people who order those packages are doing so to tackle the big files (blue rays? ps3 games? etc) so whats the point of having such a fast line if you cant even properly use it?

Well I like fast lines due to a lot of work I do in updating sites and communication.
Can't speak for others but I suspect your right - but then the broadband companies know this too but I suspect really don't in all honestly, want to know exactly what your using your fast speed for in most cases.

Irish regulations in this area are yet another Irish depressing joke and many, many, many people are being ripped off BIG time.
Don't expect anything in this area to change soon - much to the broadband companies delight.

We've had ntl for about 4 yrs, 3 times we got warning letters and then about 3 months later when we went over the limit again we just got upgraded and had to pay the higher amount.

Twice i called them and threatened to cancel and they reduced the price to the lower package but left the package the same.

We have used a few download trackers but with 3 PCs and a smart phone in the house, they're not entirely reliable.

Pfft, 218GB is nothing. They talk about our account in hushed tones around the UPC offices. We've never been upgraded to the "Extreme" package though.

I would think something like the whole Disney back catalogue of childrens films or the full scrubs 1-9, possibly all series of Stargate, maybe even the top 100 films on last century in HD.

There are plenty of 80GB packs out there.

Uncompressed audio/video can easily hit that size. Many packages of drum samples hit around 40GB each.

Well here is a conversation I had today with UPC's salesteam (I took screenshots if anybody wants them)

    ==============
Please wait a moment for an agent to reply.

You are now chatting with 'Chris'

Chris: Hello, my name is Chris, how can I help you today?

    you: hello chris

you: i was considering the 30Mb broadband package - is there any cap on the amount that can be downloaded every month?

Chris: No that is completely unlimited downloads. Could I just ask your name and your full address please so I can check the availability of the broadband service?

you: no need - i know for sure it's available, my neighbour has it

    Chris: Ok, that's great.

you: i was asking about the limit since sometimes I need to download large files in order to work from home - so it wouldn't be uncommon to sometimes download around 300 or even 400 Gb

you: so that would be ok then?

Chris: Well our downloads are unlimited for our 30meg broadband so that would not be a problem.

Chris: Do you currently have the UPC television service at home?

Chris: Is there anything else you would like to ask regarding the broadband?

Chris: Are you having any difficulty with the website?

you: sorry - I was distracted

you: are you sure about the unlimited bit? i certainly don't want to be penalized for heavy use - just double checking

Chris: I can honestly say that it is unlimited, it even says on our website, so it's there in writing so we cannot put that there if it isn't going to be unlimited.

    ========

    Go figure....

^^^ If you had recorded this it would be sufficient evidence for you not to be charged for going over seeing as you relied on his representation for getting the service. ie you said you needed the high capacity for working at home.

Try calling off your mobile and record it. Most mobile phones that are worth anything have a call recorder built in
