Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Avast free, Avira free and Microsoft security essentials are all very good.

Personally I use Avast 6 free and am finding it great. http://download.cnet.com/Avast-Free-Antivirus/3000-2239_4-10019223.html?part=dl-85737&subj=dl&tag=button

You will also need a Firewall. I would suggest Pc tools firewall plus as it's quite user friendly.

    Microsoft Security Essentials
    or
    Avast Antivirus

There are more, but these are the ones recommended most by boardsies that are free. You only need to download one of them. Having two will conflict with each other and slow your computer down

Avast is my personal favourite. AVG is another good one

AVG, get the free version on www.download.com, the AVG website hides the free version very well but the lads in CNET have it on their website. It's currently the most popular Windows download, that should convince you that it's the one to go for, click on 'Most Popular' on the left of the homepage.

Just be warned that when using any free anti-virus you will frequently see screens asking you to 'upgrade', this is how they get people on to the subscription version so you need to be careful what you click on. Better to just set the s/w to upgrade the virus signature files automatically, then you don't have to worry about unintentionally 'upgrading' to the subscription version.

Agree that Avast is much better than AVG.

I've had to clear a virus off 8 laptops over the past 20 months - it was the virus which tells you that you have a virus and prompts you to go to a webpage and pay a subscription. It also disables your wireless networking.

6 out of the 8 laptops were running AVG free, which didn't prevent the virus from installing. The other 2 laptops didn't have any protection. I used Spyware Doctor to remove the virus.

AVG has down dowmhill recently. The addition of things like link scanner and a generally more bloated behaviour has contributed to this. Avast on the other hand has a smaller performance footprint. M$ Security Essentials has also surprised with it's good performance.

I would definitely go with MSE. AVG used to be the free one to go with, but hasn't been nearly as good as it used to be.

Avast or MSE is pretty good, Malwarebytes i always thought was a good shout but have experienced and seen some posts about it being a bit on the dodgy side.

Malwarebytes free version is only an on demand scanner. The paid version has real time protection but is not very good from what i've seen.

I was a big AVG fan, but as was said above, there was a serious issue on the last version with the Link Scanner... put me off using it altogether, particularly when there was the option of the Microsoft free AV...

Been using the MSE (Microsoft Security Essentials) for about the last three months, and I have no complaints.. This is what I would recommend..

    +1 for MSE

    Thank you for the explanation.
So if I want to change from AVG what do I do? A or B below or doesthe sequence matter ?
A: install new antivirus and uninstall old one
B: uninstall old antivirus and install new one.

Always uninstall old anti-virus before installing a new one.

McAfee also have their own uninstall tool here.

So just follow those steps (you'll have to reboot your machine after) and then install the new one.

Would be handy to download the new antivirus first to your desktop before uninstalling. That way when you reboot you can just run the file.
