Using o2 mobile in US

Hi just looking for info on using my mobile while in the states. Im a rtg customer and am wondering what is the best way to get by over there? should I top up before I go, do it on line or would it be better to get a local sim card and just use that. My handset is unlocked (nokia c7). Thanks Yall
