to buy an internal blu ray drive do you have to have a certain spec computer?and as well as that to get the full effect does your monitor have to be hi def?

There's not much point in getting a Blu-Ray drive if your monitor is below 1920x1080 and absolutely no point if it's below 1280x720.

To play HD content, you will need a suitable graphics card, what card do you have?

You'll also need a relatively decent processor (C2D or above should do nicely, but that's just something I've plucked out of the air tbh!)

You'll most likely need SATA connectors on your motherboard as well

may as well forget it so lol
the dell dimension i have is running fine and has loads of memory and ram but from what you guys are saying it wouldnt be able to cope.the monitor would cope im sure.its very new with hdmi etc but as i said the pc wouldnt cope.

You could at least list the specs.

Don't think you have much chance with that, sorry.

jeez you make it sound like i should throw my pc in the bin.:)

    what spec should you have?

Sorry if it read like that.

CPU might do, but I'm not too sure.
GPU wouldn't suit it at all, can you get me the Motherboard's model name/number? If not, can you tell me if it has a PCI-Express slot?

You need around the same spec to play 1080p h264 encoded mkv files.
dual core 2jiggahertz, or single core 4 jiggahertz.
a jig or two of ram.
a graphics card from the last 10 years.
a good monitor would be nice too.

    Hmm.

 A 1.6Gigahertz Atom should be fine
a jig or two of ram.
    I'd recommend 2+ gigs myself
a graphics card from the last 10 years.
A 4350 or above would be good

You need a geforce 8 series GPU or later, or a radeon hd2000 series GPU or later. If you do have one you don't need to worry about your CPU as the GPU handles the heavy stuff. Older cards don't support GPU video decoding.

That graphics card is going on for 8 or 9 years old at this stage, and no offence meant (I used to have one), but it was a poor performer even back then! Any chance you have of playing HD video will definitely be hampered by that card.

You'll need a new graphics card and possibly a PCI sata controller at the very least, but even then I wouldn't want to guarantee smooth playback. (besides that you'll have a nightmare finding a decent AGP graphics card...)
It might be worth looking at some refurbished PCs which already have a sata controller and support PCI express graphics cards imo

This is a handy program, Cyberlink Blu-Ray advisor for telling you if your computer is able for blu ray. It will advise on the upgrades you need aswell.

Your Pentium 4 will not be up to it anyway.

    Overspec FTL.

Sure it only took 6 jigga watts and a flux capacitor to get a car to go back in time....

    1.21  /geek

EDIT: There also is no Jigga prefix, Doc just pronounced it wrong.

    Hmm.

Atom is new tech, I was thinking more P3 or P4.
I also may have been confused.
It's probably 1.25 dual core, 2/2.5 jiggahertz one core.

I think you're confusing everybody by calling it jiggahertz tbh:p
