harold doesnt give it instructions, so it cant disobey harold, harold gave it a purpose, to help people in danger, and left it to do whatever it wants, it can choose not to save people if it wants, it is by all intents and purpose a human, just without a body, and much much smarter,

he wrote the original code ie instructions

yeah but the code is so that the machine could have cognitive function, so that it could learn and grow on its own,

do you not understand what an AI is or something, cause its the entire premise of the show

yes the premise is that its the AI Harold wrote.

    you said it had morals.

its AI not a sentient being

Did they explain where Shaw was going, in the car? Season 4 was hit and miss, did love the brotherhood story.
Season 3 was by the far the best season, the dynamics of the show changed.

thats exactly what an AI is, a sentient being, it might not be organic, but it is intelligent, and self aware

obviously there are no AIs in existence, thus why this is a fictitious TV show and not based on true events,

harolds machine has morals, samritan does not have morals, thus why harolds machine saves lives and samaritan kills anything thats a threat to it existence

its not sentient, its an AI, it has founding instructions

or has it turned into Number Five alive?

  • Registered Users Posts: 963 ✭✭✭James74

Yep, it pretty much has done exactly that. My interpretation of the machine was that it was an AI, sentient, self aware and moralistic. It is Number Five without the cool tracks :)

if you dont believe the machine is sentient then why watch the show, its a machine it must be programmed, but its programmed so that it can rewrite its own code, i wouldnt watch the show if it was simply a machine programmed to do as its told, thats why its such a good show, cause the machine is its own self, it wouldnt talk to harold to 4-5 years, and when push came to shove it chose to talk to root rather than harold, and still refused to talk to him even though he was asking why,

so if its not sentient and is programmed, then it must obey, if harold gave it an order it must do as its told, cause its a program, but it doesnt do it, cause its evolved beyond its original programming,

    that doesn't mean its sentient.

is this only answer to criticism of a show on boards

    'well then don't watch'?

so you believe the machine does what harold "programmed" it to do, and nothing more, that the machine has not evolved in anyway since the day it came online,

its not that im saying 'well dont watch it', im thinking more along the lines of are we watching the same show, its a great show regardless,

i think the machine has shown multiple times that it can think by itself, it doesnt take orders off anyone, harold programmed that machine to dump its collective knowledge every night, and only to keep its core program intact, the machine evolved beyond that programming, by itself, harold himself was shocked that it could do that,

yes it can write more programmes, but because he programmed it do so, it still has its core programme that harold wrote, his surprise it how much more it can do, its not sentient.

the machine just made a decsion that its existence is relevant, thats proof of being sentient, it knows it exists, it knows it relevant, so it made the decision to save itself in that suitcase,

a sentient machine isnt gonna magically pop into existence, it will be programmed and it will break free from that program, and when it becomes self aware then its sentient,

this will just go back and forth, ive offered multiple occasion where the machine showed itself to be self aware, and it has evolved far beyond harolds initial programming, all you keep saying is that it was programmed, and you just admitted it can write it own programs, cause it was programmed that way, but it was then educated after it came online, and weve seen harold educate it over 20 times in multiple flashback, and it learnt from harold, harold thought it the cost of a human life, and thats why the machine chooses to save people, it wasnt programmed to do it, it chose to do it,

They have their upfront presentation on Wednesday so we should know then, if not before. But the fact they've announced cancellations like CSI and Stalker is probably a good sign

it was programmed to protect itself, it was told to protect human life, particularly useful assets.

Define sentience. You are an organic machine operating out a insanely complex program, from your DNA. All your emotions and reaction types are preprogrammed but can be overruled by conscious decision.

I feel that you are being delibrately stubborn, in your posts, for a reaction

maybe not, maybe expactationlost working on an AI program and needs a bit of inspiration to find a way of making it self aware, you never know who youd be talking to on a forum like this :pac::pac::pac:

    Person of Interest renewed

Edit may be the final season.
For the sole non-CBS-produced returning show, POI, I hear this may be the final season.

That's a great move. As much as I'd like it to go on and on, a finishing line means they can build up to something truly great and end on a high note (and syndication). :D

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,533 ✭✭✭don ramo

i can live with that, said it earlier that itd be better to end it sooner rather than later, before the show ran out steam,

im not surprised it was renewed, i fully expected it, but still its great news :)

Rumoured to only be a 13 episode season

Suppose that might cut out the filler episodes though

Makes sense, with the machine no longer able to spit out those numbers the procedural element of the show is all but dead.

Plus there's been 90 episodes to date, shorter season still gets it over the 100 mark for syndication. I'd be happy with a 13 episode final season, no filler and with the knowledge it's ending they can work towards a good resolution of the story.

ya, probably good seeing as johnathan nolan is also doing westworld over on HBO, so it probably makes the best use of his time, he can give POI a good ending and move straight into westworld, instead of dividing his attention,

im even more buzzed for it to come back now, cant wait to see how it plays out,

They just need a newer more powerful processor and job done. Isn't that how Samaritan is the stronger machine now.

It's a lot more than just one processor.. Samaritan also uses the latest tech and the gang have no resources. They don't even have allies with Elias dead and a potential ally, Control, in a deep hole.
