Using a Sat Nav in a Lorry

Just wondering if you can use a sat nav in a 24 volt lorry? I have just bought a Garmin 1410 and a friend has now mentioned to me that it does not work in a 24v vehicle. Is this correct?

Does your phone charger work , giving out 5 volts?

My Garmin has 10-30V input written on its charger, so apparently it'll work in a car or lorry, even if the power's a bit under or over. Nuvi 255w, older unit, charger has the older Garmin logo and all (but its the current USB one).

Additionally you can get specialised lorry satnavs, in other countries they have road widths and curve radii to route lorries to more suitable roads; I doubt they do here but they'll definitely withstand 24v.

Thanks for your help. Just rang Garmin Support and they have advised that I get a converter that I plug into the cigarette lighter that will reduce the voltage to 12v. Any ideas where I can get one of these?

Also - the guy in Garmin said that I could get a software download from a "3rd Party" that would identify bridge restrictions and other dangers for lorries. Again - does anyone know where I could get this from?

    Thanks

The ciggie lighter on any trucks dashboard will be putting out 12V.

Some have 12V, some have 24V, some have both. Connections will often be marked.

As MYOB points out though, most Garmin chargers will work with either.
