Dry cleaners ruined hat

Hi all, I brought a felt hat (along with some other items) with a small stain on it to an agent for a dry cleaners. The agent said that she didn't know if they could clean the hat so she couldn't give me an estimate for the cost. When I picked up the other clothes last Saturday she produced the hat and said that the cleaner hadn't been able to get the stain out so there was no charge. However, it was clear that they had tried to clean the small stain and in that process created a much bigger stain, ruining the hat. I told the agent that this wasn't acceptable -- I mean the hat came back much worse than it went it --- and asked for a solution. This was an expensive hat. That was on Saturday and the agent still has not called me, as promised. Does anybody know how I should deal with this? Do they have to compensate me? Thanks.

So do you want him to compensate you for your stain or his stain. Sounds like he had a go but didn't succeed. Did you not want him to try and get the stain out. It's hardly fair that he's on a hiding to nothing for trying.

So if a mechanic "tried" to fix a minor problem with your car, but actually wrecked the engine you'd say that was fine??? All service providers have to take "due care". FYI He accepted libaility.

I had the same issue with a coat last year the buckle on the collar was tatally ruined by the clean this was a very expensive coat so wasnt pleased i just brought it back and they apolagised and replaced the buckle for me no big issue.

So if your hat is unfixable they should replace it i cant see an argument if they where that unsure they shouldnt have tried

The fact the dry cleaners didnt charge you could be an issue. Were there any care instruction on the hat?

Hats rarely carry care instructions although gents flat caps sometimes do. The mistake the drycleaner made was not informing the customer of the risk with stain removal. It was probably spot cleaned which is a skilled technique and by the sound of it in this case, should only have been carried out by a specialist. As he has admitted liability .....his loss, customers' gain.
By the way if the extra 'stain' is just a spotting mark from trying to remove the original stain it may still be possible to correct the 'damage'.
