Football the Archaic Sport?

Sports such as Rugby and to a greater extent NFL and NBA have brought in technology not just to improve officials but players players are contracted to a club and that club then do everything to increase the players ability and bring them to there physical peak and keep them there far earlier and far longer then normally possible.

They control everything from diet to technique to using orthodontic gum shields to increase adrenaline and special clothing to maximise cooling and sweat run off but also with special markers that are easyier to see with your peripheral vision so you can see your team mates bettr(in fact canterbury's Portsmouth jerseys did this) but football seems to be dragging there heels pretty badly in taking these measures to increase there chances of winning only Milan seem to have any type of program in place.

Do clubs need to implement these schemes or does technique and talent merely triumph every time in football?

United have a fairly top end sports science wing as do a lot of PL clubs, it's just the technology that's lacking and to be fair there are a lot more football clubs and people playing it than American Football and Rugby probably put together in the world so it would be hard to implement.

How much of this is gimmick though?

Every club uses sports science, controls diet, does SMART fitness tests etc.

I think football is doing a good job in many places. The Spanish and German FAs are showing everybody the way to go in training youth players and general preparation. They are utilising the full range of technology available to them. Teams like United, Barcelona etc have very good set ups too in terms of these technologies.

Plus there are a lot of gimmicks out there. Not everything is necessary.
