    Hi ya'll,

Heading to Wexford some weekend soon with my bf and 5yr old and was wondering what there is to do around the town and countryside? Is there anything to entertain a 5 yr old? Castles? good food? markets? theatre?

    Thanks

So the rumour is that we're due some snow - this might hinder your plans a little.

Check out the Heritage park if you want something interesting to do. The main street isn't too bad for shopping either, theres the usual places like Argos etc. There's no real markets in Wexford anymore.

I'm drawing a blank as to what else you could do here! Check out Rosslare or Curracloe beach if the weather holds up.

Lots of places to eat from dinners to lunch to fast food.. the Farmers kitchen/Drinagh court hotel do quite nice food - a little pricey for what you get but still good, usually quiet and loads of parking. Nearby there's macdonalds towards the rosslare road. When you get into town there's Taste Restaraunt, the Yard, plenty of pubs do grub also. Parking is usually hard enough to get in town on the weekend - try the underground car park near the Bank of Ireland/Supervalu if you're stuck.

I am presuming you have your own transport.
I would really recommend driving out to Hook head to see the lighthouse.
they have a nice small visitor centre and you can get a guided tour of the lighthouse.
I was there recently and there was a terrible gale blowing but it was fantastic. i think a 5 year ld would love it......but keep a tight grip on his hand if walking around on the road near the rocky shoreline :)

On the way out to Hook you could also visit Tintern abbey. the abbey may not be open but it still is pretty imposing and a 5 year old might like a quick ramble around the grounds!

The Agriculture Museum and Johnstown Castle would also be worth dropping into however it is closed weekends up until the 31st of March as I found out recently when I popped in on a Saturday :(

    Wexford heritage Park!

If you turn left down by Ferrycarrig castle (after the hotel)on approaching Wexford Town....I think I spotted a giant giraffe overlooking the bay recently (didn't check it out).
Might be a good photo opportunity with the 5 year old. You can see it from the main road!

The 1798 Rebellion visitor centre in enniscorthy is also worth a visit if you like history!

Also might be worth trying to get hold of some 2 for 1 vouchers from your local tourist office!
You can download some here but I'm not 100% if they accept downloaded vouchers. you may have to check!

Ask the tourist office for the Discover South East Ireland voucher book and guide. I have picked up several in Dublin :)

SNOW!!!!!!!!! Jasus I missed that one! It's certainly cold enough.

By the way we got yummy wholesome food to eat in Westgate Design!
    Their spacious restaurant is downstairs.

    hi,

for a family weekend you could also try ballycross apple farm for the kid...http://www.ballycross.com/ its a nice day out...

also there is a small country mini farm in carrig byrne just about 15 mins outside wexford town on a good main road on the way to waterford. also a nice forest and hill there for walking trail.

you could go to eden vale which has a nice little river forest walk and waterfall just off castle bridge about 5 mins outside wexford town. http://www.geograph.ie/photo/829860

johnstown is a lovely place to visit also.
    http://www.irishagrimuseum.ie/johnstown_castle_estate/johnstown_castle.htm

also a nice fort and beach in duncannon which was used in the 2002 film with guy pearce/richard harris "count of montycristo"...
http://www.duncannonfort.com/ and is a nice little village....

loads of good beaches including, curracloe(10mins outside wexford town and used for the opening scenes of Saving Private Ryan), Rosslare, St.Helens, duncannon, and lots of nice bay's around the ring of Hook!

you can do the south-east coastal Drive if feeling adventurous...
    http://www.discoverireland.ie/Southeast/Features/South-East-Coastal-Drive.aspx

also could visit Kilmore quay, a nice quaint fishing village with nice restuarant (lobster pott), or even take a trip to Rosslare Harbour to see the boats come in or go out! the terminal itself is ran down at the moment but there is a nice spot overlooking the harbour on a hill where a couple of old WW2 bunkers are, a walkway and places to sit and eat a picnic!

for eating and for beautiful gourmet food at a very affordable price you have "cistin elie" in wexford town.... modern irish cuisine with starters priced around the 5 euro mark and main courses about 10 euro... i have had a beautiful version of bacon and cabbage there during the week and it was absolutely fantastic... its done out like a little cafe but the food is top top quality to rival any mitchelin star restaurant! it is beautiful but dont be put off by the unassuming nature of the place outside...
some reviews for you here :

also jacques in green acres is a beautiful place to sit for a coffee or if you wanna spend a little bit more on lunch or dinner in the evenig , great atmostphere food and wine, also an art gallery above on two floors!
    http://www.greenacres.ie/

you have loads of shows in the art centre and galleries
    http://www.wexfordartscentre.ie/

for the kids you have various fun/play houses such as "lesiuremax" on the rosslare road beside mcdonalds for the usual bowling, arcade and funhouse for kids.... http://www.leisuremax.ie/

cinema accross the road from there too ....
    http://www.omniplex.ie/cinema/cinema/wexford/

also a good pub and kid friendly and newly opened to lush standards is the THOMAS MOORE TAVERN who have a bistro in there which is meant to be really nice for food....
    http://www.dcswx.ie/architectural_portfolio/thomas_moore_tavern.htm

other good restaurants in wexford are "le tire bouchan" over the sky and the ground pub and lots of nice cafe's and small places to eat along the main street and in town!!

A saturday market can be found out by mcdonalds with all sorts of stalls selling everything from tools, clothes or homemade bakeries etc etc. music, dvd's... all under a roof(in case its raining).

and of course you can always visit our top quality opera house for a show if you fancy
    http://wexfordoperahouse.ie/

or depending on the time of year shows in the dun mhuire theatre ...
    http://oysterlane.com/home/

hope this helps !!!! im bloody exhausted ! :D
