We are thinking of re locating to Dunleer with our children. We would like to get some feedback from anyone who lives or has lived there.

What are the locals like? Would they be clannish or would they welcome us?

What schools are in the area? And which one is the best one to send children to?

We have looked at the Rivervale estate? Is this a good estate or a no no?

What facilities is there sports wise for young children?

Any other points or tips be great to help us make our decision. :D

    hey

    im a dunleer man myself.

i dont think the town is clannish, but living here all my life i wouldnt see it anyway. in the last 5/6 years loads of people moved here so i dont think people would view you as an 'outsider' or anything like that.

in the area there is a primary school. this would be the one to send the kids to, its the biggest in the area. for secondary, there is scoil ui mhuiri in the town also. i went there, great school. its had an extension and has pretty good facilities.

rivervale id say has good points and bad points. a lot of the people who moved to the town moved there so there would be what some people would call "rougher" people living there. dont think that myself, its a mix like all estates. young couples, larger families, professionals and dossers, like every estate generally

sports wise for kids there is a lot. there is the local GAA club, Lannleire, teams for boys and girls. there is the local soccer club, Dromin Utd, teams for boys and girls. there is Dunleer AC which is an athletics club. very good club and known the country over for excellence. they are also building a playground in the main park in dunleer.

good pubs. Shearmans and the Dunleer Inn (mullers) would be the main two. mullers perhaps would be a younger crowd, but shearmans has music a lot and is a very nice pub. then there is connors and the corner house. older crowds perhaps but good spots.

Carlitos restaurant is the only restaurant, after that its more cafes, of which there are two. 2 butchers, 2 chemists, a spar and a centra, 2 bookies, few clothes (womens) shops. a CU,a bank and a PO. 1 newsagents. 2 takeaways and 2 chinese. 2 barbers and 2 (maybe 3) hairdressers.

thats all i can think of, anything else just ask

Hi Event. Thanks very much for that information. It s a big decision for us as the children would have to start all over again, and im a little nervous because of them.

Also my job is in Dublin so i would have to commute daily ,so it is trying to outweigh the pro's with the con's?!

Would anyone know what the traffic is like from Dunleer to Dublin in the mornings?

Dunleer is only a 2 minute drive from the M1 motorway, and from there it's a straight run to Dublin. The traffic on the M1 is usually ok, especially as the new 3 lane section at Lisenhall is now open (or soon to open, I'm not sure which).

However, you have to cross the toll bridge at Drogheda - this will cost €1.90 each way. Going through Drogheda to avoid the toll isn't the best option, as you'd end up spending that much extra in time and fuel.

Im not from Dunleer but i know people who are . Seems like a grand little town to me with everything you could want . Very close to the coast also with clogherhead , termonfeckin beach etc . Drogheda is only 10 mins down the road and dundalk is up the way also so everything else you need is catered for . Traffic from dunleer early on is grand , through the toll etc .Gets busy round airport / malahide etc .

Hold on there a minute, the op asked what was it like to live in not how good or bad the football team was, for information the football team (Lannleire) was senior for a number of years and has gone through a bad spell but so have the likes of stabannon and others, I dont think a goodgolfer like you would know a lot about football as you would be too afraid of injury.
There is a population of just over 2000 in Dunleer the local football club has one of the biggest and best juvenile structures in place, there are now two pitches one of which is dedicated to juveniles, there is also a ladies team and a team now being setup for underage girls, the running track also belongs to the football club and is leased to the athletic club it is used mainly by walkers during the day, there is also the Lannleire pavilion which has just recently opened a new community Gym, so the while the team is not the best the club and community spirit is one of the best.
goodgolfer if you have never lived here dont knock it.

OP if you need any other info let me know I have lived here over 40 years..

    Cheers for all the information.:D

Is it Scoile Bhride national school on the Ardee road that is the main school in Dunleer village? Would rather send the children to a school in walking distance than have to drive every day.

From my experience it seems to be a really nice place.

It's a small town and has some really decent places to eat out in and services etc.

Catch yourself on! The OP asked for reasonable advice. Phone the school to get an opinion on it? nonsense.

OP, Dunleer (not my home town) seems an excellent place to live. I know a few people from there and they all like it. The commute is probably no worse that for people living in, or nearer to, Dublin.

Dunleer is a great small town with almost everything you need, it is smack bang in the middle of Louth it was the first village I do believe to be bypassed yet it didnt become over populated, some great planning was in the pipeline beside the railway station, when this does happen the station will open and then you are just a 40min train ride to Dublin or about 1hr to belfast.
Both schools are excellent the secondary school receives some of the highest grades in the county.
    Plenty of sport.
What you into? Where are you living now, do you socialise much because the people of Dunleer are far from Curios where ever that came from, they are very easy to get on with, you will have no problems making new friends.

Bad reports about the houses in Rivervale not being built too well ie, soundproofing still going on in previously sold houses, you can hear your neighbours talking clearly.
There are a few great houses for sale in Beechwood drive and Church view both of which would be a far better house and all with great neighbours,I lived in beechwood myself for 30 years before I went to the country but would not hesitate moving back.

Yes thats the main school. Its about a 5 minute walk from Rivervale.

Edit: Just seen mattock s post above and would agree about the bad reports on the houses in Rivervale.

I'm a Drogheda native living in Dunleer for the last 19 months! Absolutely love living here. The village is the right distance from the three main towns in Louth. In spite of a large influx of people from outside the area, it has still maintained the small village atmosphere. Everyone is very friendly, always a buzz about the place and lots of community events to get involved with!
I'm also working in Dublin. The traffic doesn't be too bad depending on what time you are leaving for work at. I used to drive until the price of diesel went through the roof, now I get the train from Drogheda which means a longer day but am saving about 40 euro a week so worth it!

I drive from Monasterboice to Ballsbridge every day...
it's not too to be honest. you're right beside the M1 too in Dunleer.
I only use the toll in the evening. Mind u most days i work earlier7/8 o clock shifts.

    To the original poster...
everything seems to be covered here.
+ it has the beautiful Rath Easker Forest & lake just outside which is lovely for walks.
I moved to live near Dunleer and think it's a fine town. Although I did spend half my childhood there!
Only downside is your children could develop probably one of the worst accents in all of Ireland!! LOL

LOL kormak is the accent strong?Ah sure whats an accent once they are happy.:D

Really thinking of going ahead with the move but the drive to Dublin is niggling away at me. I have to be in work for 8am so how much time should i allow? (Work in Swords area.)

Was thinking maybe car pooling maybe a way to go even for one or two days per week?...

Yeah the accent is strong enough and of course, there is the Dunleer wave too :P

I work in Baldoyle & start at 8am too, when I was driving, it took about 50mins! I used to leave at 7am though just to be on the safe side. If you start at 8am, then you prob finish at 4 or 4.30, so you'd beat the traffic on the way home too!

I worked in Dunleer for a few months and loved the village - friendly locals, good pubs and nice places to eat. The accent is atrocious, but more endearing than that of either of it's larger neighbours. Can't comment on the Dunleer wave.. :)

    Go for it man!
Dunleer - Swords at that time could be done in 30 mins tops.

OP.you can purchase a house in Rivervale from 140k, but there are some serious issues with them, the sewerage is a disaster, the houses were being soundproofed but the builder seems to have gone bust, I have also heard of floors sinking. get a good surveyor if you are thinking of going ahead with the purchase, i would'nt take one if i got it free.

do you know the park in dunleer, opposite beechwood drive?

there is a path running through it, which bisects it, leaving a main part and smaller triangle, down beside the church and the lane the priests used to use when going from chapel to the house.

its in that smaller patch of grass afaik

It was turned down there by the council, it is now going behind the church at the rear, just after viewing the tender docs.
Should be great for the young ones by the look of it.
They have to fundraise so dig deep everyone.
