Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

The 6th annual Boards.ie photography trip to Charleville Castle has been confirmed we got the 18th and 19th of June all to ourselves. A big thanks to everyone who voted for the dates I know it got a bit messy but it's always important to try keep everyone happy.

Well this is your opportunity to photograph and stay over night in one of the most ornate Neo-Gothic Castles in all of Ireland. The castle is only open to the public for guided tours but during your stay you will have the freedom of the castle and it's grounds.

    ==== INFO PACK ====

This year our numbers are limited to 30 so first 30 to send me their details via the registration form will secure a place and the rest will be put on the good old waiting list there are always cancellations or maybe even an increase in our allocation so stick your name down and I'll see what I can do. I'll keep everyone up to date on places as the registrations are processed.

    Registration form

The agreed donation/fee for the weekend has been set at €35 which is payable upon arrival to either myself or designated castle staff all the proceeds go directly towards the castle restoration and upkeep. Oh please have exact change handy.

Closing date for registrations will be the 1st of June and late registrations will simply not be accepted as the castle require details to be sent ahead of us arriving.

Please submit your details ASAP as this will be considered your booking confirmation.

If for some reason your plans change and you are unable to make it let me know and i can hand the place over to one of the waiting.

You can get a special torch in Maplins, which you shake a few times, and it gives it enough charge to light your way. It's nice and bright. No batteries are needed. Very handy.

Secondly, if camping buy a cheap airbed and pump (usually cost less than 20 together). The grass can lumpy under you, so a good airbed = good nights sleep, IMO.

For the other lazy people aside from myself who has a car, there was a Burger King nearby which opens early for Saturday morning breakfast. For Sunday, there's a pub called Loughreys open early that does an excellent breakfast. I have no idea if they still do breakfast, but I hope so :D

Or you can just not goto bed, and cook breakfast with other mad people at 6am ^.^

    =-=

Questions: How goes the legal case with the stables? How goes the general refurb? Any more rooms done up? Is the secret exit (though the bookcase) from the library functional, or is the area it leads to still blocked off?

AFAIK nothing major has changed but the castle has changed how it is dealing with the court case as in it's going on the offensive now.

Slow is the key word here. As you may know events such as ours are the ones that bring in money and as you may not know there are not too many of them. Things are moving ahead but slowly it's more fire fighting to keep the place standing.
    the_syco wrote: »

No but the kitchen stove was fixed up and this was as a result of the cash we brought in last year by us.

Still the exact same condition as last year. That door leads to the chapel and there is a project currently running to put a roof on the chapel which would allow for restoration work to start on that area.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,063 ✭✭✭GristlyEnd

A little tip. Don't start drinking Belgian beer (10% vol) when you arrive at the castle. Wait until later in the evening :p

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,071 ✭✭✭dakar

I concur, start off with something a bit lighter, 7%, say...

It's a supposedly haunted castle... if you got one of them you'd have to paint it up to look like the Mystery Machine from Scooby Doo.

£299.99!! Jaysus. I'll stick with the cheap & cheerful Argos tent.

You could probably buy a VW Van for that!
