Our brand new sat nav was robbed so I don't plan on shelling out on a new one. Any pitfalls in buying a second hand one? Apart from the fact that it might not turn on or work.

Garmin models lose their antenna and processing units. So you might find no service except in the open with all available satellites available to you.

And OR in an estate with parallel roads you are directed up road B instead of road A to the exact location but disposed a few metres. You might be told to stop as the side of the main road when your target is down a side road in an estate.
