Fence Paints

I have a fairly large smooth timber fence to paint and am wondering is it worthwhile using fence preserver at £25-£30 per 5 litres compared with ordinary fence paint at £10 per 5 litres, seeing that it takes 3 or more coats of preserver as against 2 of fence paint. What are the advantages of the huge extra cost?
