How is not respecting an idea equal to not respecting the person who holds the idea

Socratic Irony.I could the tell from the moment I read your posts that you would try that.

It depends, in this case you were intentionally disrespecting and ridiculing what is more then an idea to a lot of people, their 'faith'.

You felt the need to do so for the reasons we can all safely assume to be that because you are an 'atheist' you have this delusion that you are "smarter" or more "open-minded" than those who have religious beliefs, which is reinforced by the "subtle" remarks you made throughout the thread, the reason for the remarks was probably to reassure yourself that you somehow are, hence the immaturity or lack of self-esteem.

Regarding your attempt to ridicule me for supposedly not understanding irony, read my relevant post until it starts to sink in.

    PS.No need to feign ignorance.

Please don't be a hypocrite by stating you respect anyones right to believe in religion, then to turn around in the very next post and call religion a 'joke'. If you respect people's right to believe in something then don't go and insult those same people in the very next breath. Keep those opinions to yourself.

    Are you serious?
I'm being honest, in my opinion religion's are a joke, thats me being honest.
What's good for me doesn't have to wash for everyone, so if the person next to me wants to believe that religions are fantastic things then thats their business.
It is possible to have two people with two conflicting ideas about a subject and for those people to be able to be mature enough to accept that everyone doesn't agree with their views.

Don't tell me to keep my opinions to myself either.
If you've got a problem with my opinions take it up with the site staff.
I haven't done anything wrong here so until I do I'll continue to express my opinions, even if you can't get your head around them.

    Glazers Out!

    PLEASE STOP GETTING PERSONAL
Now that you have googled Socratic ignorance please google 'straw man argument' which is what your entire post is.
Socratic irony =Socratic Irony is when a person pretends to be ignorant of something or someone in order to expose the weakness of another's position
I asked a question of you several times which you have refused to answer. Socratic irony does not apply as I have never pretended ignorance. I know the answer but need to clarify your position.
This is your first straw man.
Your second is that an idea is not an idea if it becomes a 'faith'. Its still an idea. Just a big popular one.
Your third is assuming that i am an atheist. Where did i say that?
Your fourth is this tiresome accusation that anyone who questions religion is assuming higher intelligence and better openmindedness.
And these straw men lead you to conclude that I have self esteem issues and immaturity (Attacking the poster again tsk tsk)

Can you show me where I have disrespected faith please and show me where i have feigned ignorance.
But before you do that please please please tell me how not having respect for an idea is the same has not having respect for the person who holds the idea .
Your avoidance of this question the answer to which you have assured me is simple, is getting embarrasing.

Now that you have googled Socratic ignorance

On the contrary, my english is proficient enough that I did not have to google 'Socratic Irony', anyway that is irrelevant.
I asked a question of you several times which you have refused to answer. Socratic irony does not apply as I have never pretended ignorance. I know the answer but need to clarify your position.

That is complete and utter rubbish, you did not receive the kind of answer you were expecting so now you are saying you wanted "to clarify my position."
Your second is that an idea is not an idea if it becomes a 'faith'. Its still an idea. Just a big popular one.

No its not, I suggest you "google" it.:pac:
Your third is assuming that i am an atheist. Where did i say that?

Even a drooling idiot can tell you are an atheist from reading your posts and your whole condescending attitude, so don't bother with rubbish such as "how do you know I am".
Your fourth is this tiresome accusation that anyone who questions religion is assuming higher intelligence and better openmindedness.

Nope, I was accusing you and rightly so as you were not "questioning religion", you deliberately try to imply to a reader that I accuse anyone who questions religion of assuming some position of superiority to give the impression that I am some close-minded religious nutjob. Please......that is just cheap.

PS. I also question religion for your information :p

(Do you even know what the straw-man argument is?)
please please please tell me how not having respect for an idea is the same has not having respect for the person who holds the idea .

    What is getting embarassing?
I already answered you question, and since you are continuing to feign igorance, I don't see the point in discussing anything further. But I am done with you anway and I am satisfied.

When will you realise that your opinions don't matter? What is there for me to get my head around, the fact that you don't believe in God and think religion is a joke?
Gee, that was hard. How did I ever get my head around that?
You're such an innovative visionary thinker with such original unorthodox views that a simple layman like me could never possibly get my head around such genius? Do me a favour. Do me a FAVOUR.
You mundane arrogant little man. You've posted on this thread about 20 times now and have said absolutely nothing. Keep bringing those amazing opinions of yours Jack, you have your audience eating out of the palm of your hand.

RepublicanEagle, GhostBuster, mind if I get in on this? GB, I agree with RE on the sentiment about not respecting the faith but respecting the person. I personally think that if a person considers religion a joke like some on this thread do, it's hard for them to respect the person that holds the faith. Because while you may get along with the person and have lots in common, for some people, maybe not you and I'm not accusing you, but for some people wouldn't there be an element of 'we do have a lot in common but how can you go to mass on sundays and listen to the teachings of someone from such a hypocritical organisation?' and 'really, you believe in God, but you seem so intelligent.' I know a lot of agnostics and atheists who would never think such a thing, but if you're going to call a religion a joke then doesn't that belittle its followers just a little? Then again, maybe that's just cynicism from one too many religion-bashing conversations.

And GhostBuster, that's just me throwing out my viewpoint because you seem to really want an answer on that question! ;)

I have had some of my closest friends ridicule my political views (they are pretty far out there {my views, not my friends....although them too} so it's pretty easy for them to do) but I have never felt they were belittling me.

I really think this attitude of treating the religious like children because of their views, treating them with kid gloves, is very patronising and most religious people I know, on here and in person, I think would feel the same. They are adult enough to have people disagree with what they think without crawling up into the fetal position and bawling "stop being mean to me".

Do you follow me around or what? I thought I recognised your name from somewhere. You're the same person who was ranting at me in the 'If you could change one law' thread last week. Stalker! Beat it or I'm alerting MickeyDolenz

Funny how the pro ' you must respect beliefs if they are weeely weeely weeely personally important beliefs' are the ones being personal and insulting and are throwing out accusations of intolerance and arrogance at those being polite whilst posting considered opinions.....

My usage? Usage implies I use it all the time and I'm pretty sure I only used it once in this thread, anyway, that's not fair, I like you <3<3<3
