Just because you dont see 'mushroom clouds' that doesnt mean there is no problem with radiation.
christ on a bike.... Yes i am aware of that. My post amounted to "hey, I was very ignorant about all things nuclear but I'm learning" and yet people have felt the need to respond "hey, you're ignorant about all things nuclear."
But how do you know that everything is under control
I don't. I was saying I appreciated the effort that people were making to get things under control. And in my ignorance would have expected things to have been worse sooner in such an old reactor that took such heavy damage. Listening to the experts has made me feel more confident about modern reactors considering how relatively new the science is. Nuclear power is something that I have been very skeptical about but I really should have learned more about it before I wrote it off as simply too dangerous, not ruling it in yet either though.

Now could people stop nitpicking me and talk about what matters? And let me get back to the expert on CNN who the presenter is pestering into saying something scary.

As of 9am radiation level at the front gate was 587mSv

edit: wait, the guy who said that might've been quoting data from 2 days ago. This is pretty confusing.

NHK are saying they are going to drop boric acid to prevent possible fission.

Tokyo Electric officials say the white smoke being reported at the Fukushima No1 nuclear plant could possibly be steam.

NHK World reporting 440,000 homeless in about 2040 shelters. Many (most?) shelters are cold and have insufficient heaters and fuel.

Guys, stop posting articles from Western news sources. They are way behind and are just recycling stories from earlier today.

I suppose that when you look at things in perspective.... Fallout may not be as big as Chernobyl, but then Ukraine is not like Japan in terms of population and pop density!

They are, but they have been way behind Al Jazeera in reporting the Arab Revolution, and now the crisis in Japan.

You need to watch the live reports
