Awful news for the Japanese, really a great bunch of people.

I had a Japanese housemate, she was utterly polite (always said "sorry" to everything :pac:) and very nice to talk too. Her Chinese BF was an utter prick to her, though.

She's from outside of Tokyo where her family live, hope for her sake none of them where caught up in this though I think they were in the region that's being devastated by the tsunami.

Japan is used to dealing with earthquakes and their buildings are of high grade so I just hope loss of life is minimal in regards to such a disaster.

Looking at the footage from Japan is shocking but i'm also shocked at what seems like really poor infrastructural planning.

I mean the airports flooded, two nuclear powerplants in trouble and the oil refinary is going up in smoke, Japan is a hotspot for earthquakes, did they not forsee these kind of disasters when building infrastructure rather than putting their own people in even more danger.

On a personal level i'm based in Korea but could so easily have ended up in Tokyo so am quite relieved. I really feel for the Japanese people, I meet so many of them here on my travels, a very warm and friendly bunch of people.
Well, it is as you say a hot spot for earthquakes, and yet Japan's airports and power plants have been perfectly fine until today, so that if anything should tell you something about how they were built. As another poster pointed out, you cannot plan for this kind of impact. How do you build something to be unaffected by a 8.9 earthquake and the resulting tsunami?

RTE in the background just reporting about the nuclear state of emergency. Very mixed reports on that :/

Desperate news. "Only good thing" is that if any people were prepared, it's the Japanese. They are a clever and resourceful people.

Sky News up to their usual tricks. Repeating the same 4 clips over and over again instead of delivering actual news.

In fairness they were the only ones that bothered their arse this morning. BBC started covering it about half an hour after SKY and Daybreak on ITV pretty much pretended it wasnt happening.

Thanks to everone on boards for posting the video links, its heart breaking to watch what is happening, I hope there wont be too much loss of life but it looks very bleak for a positive outcome.

Well done mods for banning the posters who posted such tripe here they should be ashamed of themselves while people are dying in Japan.

The news channels here can only show what they are given, the newscaster on Sky News actually mentioned that,as new footage comes in they broadcast it.
At least these days we get realtime footage from such events, imagine coverage even just 25 years ago.
RTE is showing Shortland Street, much more important even though they now have a dedicated news channel.:(

I'll be praying for the families caught up in this. Thankfully Japan is one of the best eqiupped countries to deal with something like this.

The 'best' coverage (TV) is on NHK World - available on Freesat.
Sky is just a moving picture version of The Sun.

Give all your money to the Red Cross. That'll help!
And they will receive it three years later.

Flicking back between Sky and BBC. Bloody hell, the presenters on Sky seem genuinely disappointed that the tsunami heading towards Hawaii isn't bigger.

BBC the way to go methinks. Pictures are extraordinary.

Why do so many people have this default reflex of switching on $ky "News" at times like this when other better news channels are now available.

    Sky News = Disaster porn
