small bit of good news for a change: coast guard rescues dog floating on the roof of a house after 3 weeks at sea

there's a video on the link as well.
3 weeks is a long time to be floating along out at sea all on your own, poor little thing. :(
Japan tsunami dog reunited with owner.

"A dog rescued from a roof drifting off Japan's north-east coast more than three weeks after a quake and tsunami has been reunited with her owner".

    Current situation in Fukushima:
Power supply to the temporary electric pumps for water supply to the Reactor Pressure Vessels (RPV) of Units 1, 2 and 3 was switched from the temporary mobile power supply to the off-site power supply on 3 April.
Lighting in a part of Units 1 - 4 Turbine Building was restored on 2 April.
On 2 April, transferring of water from the Unit 1 condenser storage tank to the surge tank of the suppression pool was completed in preparation for transferring water in the basement of the Unit 1 turbine building to the condenser. Also on 2 April, transferring of water from the Unit 2 condenser to the condenser storage tank was started in preparation for transferring water in the basement of the Unit 1 turbine building to the condenser.
A second US Navy barge arrived on 2 April carrying fresh water that is being transferred to the first barge which is pumping water to the "filtered water tank".
TEPCO has identified a possible leakage path from the Turbine Building of Unit 2 to the sea via a series of trenches/tunnels used to provide power to the sea water intake pumps and supply of service water to the reactor and turbine buildings. Initial attempts on 2 April to stop the leak, by pouring concrete into the pit, were not successful. On 3 April, the top of the trench was broken open and polymer was poured into the trench in an attempt to stop the leakage of water to the sea through the pit, but leakage has not stopped as of 00:00 UTC on 4 April.

Strange how the worse the situation gets in Fukushima the less it is being covered by the media.. I just checked the BBC homepage to see if there was anything about Fukushima- nothing whatsoever.
Plant radiation monitor says levels immeasurable
A radiation monitor at the troubled Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant says workers there are exposed to immeasurable levels of radiation.

The monitor told NHK that no one can enter the plant's No. 1 through 3 reactor buildings because radiation levels are so high that monitoring devices have been rendered useless. He said even levels outside the buildings exceed 100 millisieverts in some places.

Pools and streams of water contaminated by high-level radiation are being found throughout the facility.

Googling "Fukushima" is not really that hard.

If/when Fukushima has any relevance to your life 6000 miles away (keeping in mind that the currents will cause it to travel more like 11,000 miles) I'm sure it will be reported on in your local media more readily.

Libya is 1700 miles away, it is of no direct relevance to our lives. By your logic the media should stop reporting on that too.

    14% of our oil

Ok, so it might put up the price at the pump a couple of cent. Any old excuse will be used to drive up the price of oil.
    dozens dying daily

Sad and all as that is, it doesn't affect us.

yeah just saw that on a the news a second ago myself. Gonna be hard to see how things pan out this time as it's the middle of the night for them now, so could be longer before we can actually see the extent of what this may have done.

7.4 is nothing in comparison to what they just had. They'll be grand.

Its still quite significant - there will be more damage.

How awful! After all these people have been going through this is the last thing they need.

Between this and the quake in NZ and whats happening in the Middle East you wonder whats happening to the world.

The 6.5 quake in Mexico and the 6.7 in Indonesia yesterday is worrying too. There's a pattern of pre-quakes leading up to those quakes. Wouldn't surprise me if there's more strong quakes around the ring of fire.

    Oh my god not again:(:(:(
They really don't deserve this at all hopefully everyone over there will be ok .

    Japan and New Zealand: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Plate_tectonics

Middle East: same old ****. And a coincidence in timing. Believed to be caused by raising commodity prices but in those countries no control of it, no increase in cost of living pay, etc. - hence the protesting.

Quite a strong aftershock tonight M7.4, 3 on Japan scale in Tokyo.

Parts of Miyage prefecture experience 6+ on Japan scale.. now that would be very unpleasant no matter how used to the aftershocks you might have become. A M4.7 occurred shortly afterwards in the same area, the night is young...

The tsunami warning at 1 meter high was for small area and time has passed with no reports of damage yet. TEPCO say workers evacuated safely from Fukushima Dai-ichi.. lets hope when they return, the reactors are not in a worse condition.

This thread has been on page 1 since the quake happened and it has 4758 replies with an average of around 175 a day. It's hardly been neglected.

From our perspective, as long as we're OK and high radiation levels don't arrive here. The Japanese do need aid though, I would hate to see the situation worse to a catastrophe.

  • Registered Users Posts: 83,033 ✭✭✭✭Overheal

unfortunately theres not much we can do right now for them. fission experts are already scrambled, you have at least 2 navies at work on the situation, and the Japanese Red Cross is sitting on a billion USD of charitable donations, none of which they seem to require immediately. It may, much later, be used for victim payouts to rebuild their lives but in the immediate future Japan has everything possible to try and handle this.

This thread has nothing to do with what I posted.

I was making the point that its being reported fukall on mainstream media anymore.Wayne Rooney saying a curse word on television is more important to the public right now apparently.

I've already posted in this thread about how good a job people are doing in here keeping others like me informed with opinion and linkage.Your right in everything you said about the thread but its completely irrelevent in relation to what I posted.

If an Earthquake of that magnitude occurred off the East Coast of Ireland, Dublin would be in rubble, so it is significant - the thing that saves infrastructure (& lives) when it comes to Japan is their earthquake proof buildings.
