have we any nuclear Mods here or any Nuclear no-it-alls?,If one station goes pop could it do a domino on it and all surrounding nuclear stations go to?

    Wave about to hit Hawawii
Well of course there is an SOE. The plant operators would want to be on alert right now. It's not indicative of an imminent problem, it's a pro-active response.

Well, that and they want to get that cooling system back online. But thats the point of having emergency procedures in place.

Imagine a Tsumani is about to hit Hawaii in the next couple of minutes and CNN goes on a flippin ad break.

    No.

And nuclear reactors do not go 'pop' like nuclear explosions.
They may have a runaway reaction, which will catch fire to the piles and maybe explode the reactor building.
There are numerous safety and redundant systems for cooling the reactor piles.
They are not all watercooled either. Gas cooling amongst others is used.

They don't have a runaway reaction. The one that triggered a local evacuation had a failure in it's diesel-powered cooling system. This doesnt equate to a runaway reaction.

Also when you say runaway reaction, you mean a nuclear detonation? No. a Meltdown may occur. The runaway reaction, certainly not. Reactors do not use weapons-grade material. Weapons Grade is very highly enriched and must during a detonation reach what is known as Critical Mass. Reactors meanwhile aren't designed with those kind of potentials.

'Meltdown' more or less describes the situation at the power plant, where the cooling system is failing and the core is overheating:

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nuclear_meltdown
Nuclear fission weapons must use an extremely high quality, highly-enriched fuel exceeding the critical size and geometry (critical mass) in order to obtain an explosive chain reaction. The fuel for a nuclear fission reactor is very different, usually consisting of a low-enriched oxide material (e.g. UO2). It is impossible for a nuclear power plant to undergo an explosive nuclear chain reaction. Chernobyl was a steam explosion, not a nuclear explosion.[7] Furthermore, all power plants licensed in the United States require a negative void coefficient of reactivity, which completely eliminates the possibility of the accident that occurred at Chernobyl (which was due to a positive void coefficient).

Good old RTE. Sean O'Rourke has Eamon Gilmore (minister for foreign affairs) and he is grilling him on why Joan Burton didn't get a stronger cabinet position.

    I can't imagine they would.

If there is a major explosion you may get radioactive dust over Europe a few days / weeks later though

Cheers I was worried planes flying today around europe may be in trouble. Obviously airspace over japan and surrounding areas would be shut.

Nuclear is kinda of that thing that people get all flexed up and fearful of but sometimes that fear is complete irrational. :) People within the radius of the plant are being evacuated as a precautionary measure. There isn't going to be huge chain reaction affecting all the nuclear plants. If there's gonna be anything then there's gonna be one reactor meltdown. Though it must be stressed barring some extreme misfortune this won't happen.:)
