    Explosion heard at quake-hit reactor
The Nuclear and Industrial Safety Agency is trying to confirm a report that an explosion occurred at a nuclear power station in quake-hit Fukushima Prefecture.

The agency said on Saturday that a person at the Fukushima Number One nuclear station reported that an explosion was heard and smoke was seen near one of the reactors at around 4PM.

The power station operator Tokyo Electric Power Company told the agency that 4 people were injured.

Video of the reactor in question shows the outer wall of the building that houses the reactor has disappeared.

Prefectural authorities say the power company informed them that the ceiling of the building collapsed after an explosion.

Tokyo Electric Power had been releasing air from the container of the reactor to lower pressure.

Pressure inside the container had been rising after the reactor's cooling system broke down due to power failure.

Radioactive substances have been detected near the reactor.

Without knowing precisely what the danger is, would you say it's time for our viewers to crack eachothers heads open and feast on the goo inside?

NHK World currently streaming on RTE News Now on DTT and I assume online.
Chances are RTE will go over and back to the stream throughout the day.

Sky had some professor on earlier who was saying that Tsunamis from after shocks are extremely uncommon and if were created they wouldnt go above a meter.
Not that much to worry about anyway.

    Confirmed small radiation leakage.

Also, although theres a north westerly wind which points it towards the sea, there's still almost a population of 500,000 people between the plant and the sea. Fingers crossed the worst doesn't happen

Serious damage to reactor container at nuclear plant unlikely - Kyodo quoting Japan nuclear safety agency

  • Registered Users Posts: 4,076 ✭✭✭gman2k

It's the roof and walls that were blown clean off the no 1 reactor at Fukushima.
The steel frame of the building is still standing
The condition of the inner container of the reactor itself is still not known. Minister Edano does not know all the facts yet.

Looks like the 8.9 quake woke up a few volcanos, 1 in Indonesia, 2 in Russia and another in Japan.

    The main reports are saying it was most likely a steam explosion with fairly low levels of radiation;
if true the Japanese Govt should have confirmed it straight away.

    hope they are being honest.

By any standards the Govt are facing a hugh amount of problems though, proably hughly sleep deprived and in some case's may not know were their loved ones are.

it must be a desperate time for them, hard not to feel for them.

I beg to differ, diffrient system but at least as destructive proably much more in worst case scenario.
their is a lot of defensive propaganda going on now by vested interests.
