    Splendid.

Fortunately No. 3 hasn't been having any problems up to this point, it should already be much cooler than the others that had problems earlier.

Dust off Google Earth. They've devoted their resources to refreshing all of their japan information with fresh satellite data

Casey Chan — Google Earth Showing New Satellite Images of JapanYou're probably going to want to polish up and open Google Earth. Google has been processing new updated satellite images of Japan and they're constantly trying to find more as fast as possible. They're on top of Kushiro, Tokyo, Kamaishi, Fukushima (before outer structure collapse) and Yokohama right now. Find the full Japan map here and follow them @EarthOutreach for updates to new cities. Ah! I thought the nuclear situation was stabilizing from an earlier post

There are six reactors at Fukushima that were the worst affected. Japan has ~50 other sites that havent had such bad problems but Fukushima was right at the heart of it really. if you look at google earth the Fukushima plant was literally the closest thing to the epicenter, only 9 miles from the 6.4 and 15 from the 8.9 magnitude quake.

It is. Only concern is whether unit one's core has been exposed. Either way they are plunging it with sea water. The rest of the units in operation also had no cooling system bar steam venting.

Is that supposed to be showing some new pictures somehow? I'm just seeing pictures of green fields and the normal Google Maps images of cities.

    same, i dont know.

look at where the Fukushima reactors are though, and look where the epicenters for the 8.9 and the 6.4

It's virtually the closest human structure to the quakes. They must have been absolutely slammed with water

Got it figured out, you need to click on the "here" in the pop up and it takes you to another GMaps page with the new images overlayed ontop.

Have managed to tie up a couple of areas on the coast beside Sendai, lots of houses in the default GMaps view. One building left and a lot of brown sludge in the overlay. :(

    yeah and they said exposed
people seem to think exposure means death
if they take their iodine tablets the vast majority should be fine

The vast majority should be fine anyways there's nothing to indicate the radiation vapour released wasn't filtered and wasn't intensely radioactive. Anyone got a figure on the level of radiation they were exposed to?
My mind boggles though, how were they exposed to it? The evacuation zone should have been more than enough.

A number of news agencies are citing that even though they have begun the process of pumping sewater an boric acid into the core they have been unable to entirely cover the rods with the solution for an unexplained reason. Workers are attempting to get all the rods submerged as quick as possible to prevent any rods which are exposed to the air from catching fire.

It seems to be that anything that is coming out of Japan in terms of breaking news actually turns out to be 10 times worse an hour later.

Wow a cherry picked graphic specifically assembled to have a go at Americans. Doesn't belong in this thread.

That's not representative of any of the Americans I have seen reacting to this disaster. None.

because that's random everyday americans at home. in their natural state. the Vmericans you see reacting to the disaster have been deployed there could be the same americans deployed to Iraq; who's to say what theyre thinking. ultimately its them thinking they have to 'fix' everything under the circumstances. i'm not saying they'd have wished for such but this is an opportunity for redemption. particularly after the rape of a japanese schoolgirl near one of their many foreign military bases at okinawa two years back. marauders will maraud. then revel in the opportunity to save face - but we digress.

AFP says the operator of the Fukushima nuclear power plant, where a second reactor system is overheating, says there is a risk of a second explosion.

At this stage I think the chances of the rods catching fire are probably remote considering the reactor was seemingly shut down 36 hours ago. Hopefully the situation will not deteriorate.
