Is their normally this many strong aftershocks? Its crazy that they are getting aftershocks that measure pretty strong earthquakes in themselves.

Aftershocks arent unheard of but this has been over days. Personally I dont think I've ever heard of such a thing but quakes arent usually an interest of mine.

i think that this is a pretty exceptional case. such a strong earthquake...

also apparently as a rule of thumb, a magnitude of one less then the original quake is the expected strongest aftershock (8.0).... theyre still waiting to see if it happens ....

    Strong tremor felt in Tokyo

The new tremor was magnitude 6.2, according to Japanese monitors

The latest after-shock would probably have been felt by many people in their homes as the government advised people not to go to school or work today due to transport disruption and power cuts

for 3 sec i thought that was the sea opening up. can see why they've been struggling with water supplies now. imagine that; widespread - the results of an earthquake for which they're as equipped as can be underground networks will need to be entirely re-laid with the possibility of it reoccuring. n to think this hasn't even been a focus with all the coastal chaos. some devastation. some job..

As if these people do not have enough to deal with, Mt. Shinmoe-dake volcano in southern Japan has erupted and is spewing ash.

For the moment the winds are southerly from the volcano, which would take the ash over the South China Sea, west of Japan. But winds are expected to turn more to the SW in the next day or so, so potential there to interfere with relief flights.

"U.S. Detects Radiation 60 Miles From Stricken Plant"

    http://www.nytimes.com/2011/03/14/world/asia/japan-fukushima-nuclear-reactor.html?_r=1

Cesium may have been detected by helicopters 96 km from the reactor....
Inside the plant, according to industry executives and American experts who received briefings over the weekend, there was deep concern that spent nuclear fuel that was kept in a “cooling pond” inside one of the plants had been exposed and begun letting off potentially deadly gamma radiation. Then water levels inside the reactor cores began to fall. While estimates vary, several officials and industry experts said on Sunday that the top four to nine feet of the nuclear fuel in the core and control rods appear to have been exposed to the air — a condition that that can quickly lead to melting, and ultimately to a complete meltdown.

U.S. Detects Radiation 60 Miles From Stricken Plant

Japan is now facing a cascade of accumulating problems that suggest that radioactive releases of steam from the crippled plants could go on for weeks or even months.

Its so hard at times to comprehend that those aren't cgi cars and people, or a cgi tsunami created for our entertainment,
You think the water has slowed but its just so deceptively powerful and just seemed to keep going, without mercy or compassion,
Its just so chilling to think that this has happened, and there simply is nothing that can prevent nature from unleashing a kind of power that leaves one speechless.
One can't help but feel sorry for the horror this has brought on the Japanese people, unlike wars and economic grief this is something that humans can't control.

EDIT: Please let this end soon, these poor people need a break!

Lets hope the rescue teams can get out of there pretty sharp!

If people are inclined to pray to a higher power, now would be a good time to do it.
