Tsunamis are hard to detect, they can travel through water as barely a ripple before they get to land and get big.

    BS

Earthquake or landslide = possible tsunami. Media utterly stupid here. JMA agency detect earthquakes instantly and are only ones who will alert media and population.

Yeh but initial reports claimed visual confirmation where there clearly was none

how can there be such contrary reports about something visible like a tsunami wave approaching shore and quickly receding sea levels? Ridiculously bad journalism

100% Agree but this has been the standard of most journalism for the entire weekend any rumour or titbit of information has been parroted without any analysis of sources, plausibility or reliability it's quite sickening really. This "latest tsunami" could have been a sick joke.

I presume they'd know immediately whether the reactor pressure vessel had been breached as the pressure inside would begin to drop rapidly. So if they're saying the reactor is fine now, then definitely is fine.

Would that it was vice versa and the "massive" and "low" adjectives were swapped around!

That cabinet secretary guy must be wrecked.

Seriously, that was a pretty big explosion! How much damage can one reactor take?!

I wonder if that is true... I certainly hope so because that reactor has plutonium in the fuel rods.

If it leaks a lot of radiation it will be equivalent to a 'dirty bomb'

Jesus a HUGE second blast going hundreds of feet into the air !

So they're easy to detect? If they were to evacuate every time there was a quake they may as well leave the islands altogether, takes a large earthquake for a tsunami.

Ah, didn't hear that, just that the alarms were sounding etc.

I think your right. News girl just quoted him there saying "There is little possibility that radiation has leaked into the air"

    Even she seems bollixed!

White smoke coming from the exploded building. Looks more like steam; if so, I wonder if that's significant.

A pretty big beating, and it's worth keeping in mind this reactor containment isn't even as strong as that as Three Mile Island it's comparably smaller and the more modern reactors are way way stronger. Obviously they have to be. :)
