I'll admit that what I said in response was stupid and anti-English and I admitted to that in my original post. I probably do have a complex if I'm honest but I do genuinely like the English.

Not at all. look at the detail, what I said is that many english people openly say that a product is better because it is English, but the reality is that it is no better or worse.

of course the Irish in Large numbers abroad can also come across as having a very similar superiority complex..

having lived in Southern Spain for a few years I saw this all the time, foreigners regularly behaved as it they were better than the locals and worse again above the Law, but thankfully Spanish police don't take any S***

So shock news! There are some English people who are proud of their nationality and don't mind saying so. Add that to a long list of nationalities who feel superior to others, the French, the Germans, Americans to name a few. Wait for it, some Irish people feel the same. We all should.

It seems we Irish have very quickly reverted to our inferiority complex after gaining some respect for ourselves during the boom years. It's time we Irish took some pride in ourselves again even if we have a few problems with our French and German masters.

So next time you drag a conversation in that direction, tell them you think we Irish are superior and tell them why.

I was bemoaning one guy!! ONE GUY!! As I said in previous posts, this was the first time I experienced something like this with an English guy. Where in any of my posts did I bemoan the whole nation?

My response was admittedly uncalled for but this guy was essentially telling me he was superior to me (he wasn't joking...not in the slightest)...I got angry....I didn't punch him in the face...I said what I said and walked away.

Your telling me that there's no people in England with that kind of attitude towards the Irish??

Meh, someone who needs to point at their nationality as evidence of some sort of superiority is only emphasising that they have no merits of their own to rely on.

Although with that said, England has a long and quite nasty history of racism, up to the present day, race riots all over the place and other unpleasantness like a right wing political party, not to mention some ugly characterisations in some of the most popular soaps. As the US ambassador said, "Reporting of the recent race riots has reflected the rabble-rousing racism which is still easy discourse in modern Britain. "

If you get upset with that, of course, you're "having a paddy", until the shoe is on the other foot. I like English people, for the most part, they have some very creative and technically skilled people there, but you do run across the odd simpleton who will casually drop real zingers into conversations. Its a problem the UK will have to face and deal with sooner or later.

Whos talking about the entire nation of english people? No one, everyone is talking about particular individuals. Yes I've met a fair few english people that had the attitude the one in the OP had, still, i've met far more sound english people.

Feeling that your country and culture is the best is what most countries call "patriotism". It's nothing to do with racism.

Just ask an Aussie, for instance.

The fact that it's more irritating coming from an English person than an Aussie says more about the relationship between Ireland and England than anything else. Or perhaps there is some innate irritatingness of the English, I dunno.

As for the whole "raping the planet" imperialist stuff, most English people would be extremely uncomfortable with many acts committed in the pursuit of empire, but TBH I no more hold myself responsible for that that than I hold a German responsible for WWII.

And FWIW, I am not very patriotic at all. But I do like Marmite. And Irish women. Well, one Irish woman at least, the one that makes me sangwiches.

He said he believed he was superior to me...that's not patriotism...that's nationalism.

I agree. I hate when famous people are on the late late show and they are harangued into telling us how much they love ireland.

Personally i have a superiority complex to most countries in the world. Ireland is still one of the most developed countries in the World. If somebody from England said he felt superior i would laugh my balls off. The country is a complete kip. The likes of Northern England and Scotland are 3rd world compared to here. I hate traveling abroad because everywhere is a dive compared to here. I think a lot of Irish have an inferiority complex to English people. If somebody from Somalia said the felt superior because they were Somali everyone would laugh and laugh at their lawless 3rd world country. Whilst if its an Englishman a defense mechanism kicks in.

Post implies having the ability to kill countless people world wide and steal other peoples countries is something to be proud of and not ashamed of.

The irish have had quite a disproportionately positive impact on this world for our small size alright, all without killing. The English have had a positive impact too, but what your trying to list is not positive, its bad.

Its people like you that give a bad name to other British people.
