It's so hard to find any straight forward information in regards to benefits for part-time workers so I though you lovely people might help me.

I've been working part-time and have been in college since I was 17. I am now 23 and I'm due to finish college in 7 weeks. I studied film in college and am even now, actively, looking for a job in editing. Finding jobs in this industry in Cork are near impossible, and I can't afford to leave the country. I have a part-time job, working 12 hours a week. Unfortunately my employer can't give me any extra hours when I finish college due to the economic climate.

I live at home with my parents. My mother is unemployed and my father self-employed but he hasn't gotten work in months. My parents can't afford to keep me any longer and I am not earning enough to live independently.

I am wondering if anybody else has been in this position and if they have, have they been entitled to any welfare benefits?

Thanks in advance for any help you can give me.

You may be entitled to JSB for up to a year for the days you don't work, providing the 12 hours is stretched over 3 or fewer days. Just don't tell the welfare officer you are only looking for work in editing, otherwise he/she will consider you not genuinely seeking employment.

I think you need to broaden your horizons and apply for the likes of abrakebra or tesco. Film editing in Cork...

Thanks for the help. I'm glad my 6 years of college weren't just a waste of my time. it has been my dream to work in the fast food sector :D

You won't be entitled to JSB as you have not suffered a loss of employment - you have always been working the same hours.
You will be applying for Jobseeker's Allowance, and this will be means tested, and your parents means will be a factor in this.
Also, you can be specific and only look in the field you have specialised in. However, after a certain period of time, you are expected to broaden your job search to other areas.
