Belling electric oven problem - need help please

    The Subject:
Belling Optima 590 (aka XOU590) built-in electric dual oven.

    The symptoms:
Both ovens stopped working last night - no heat.
BUT - the dual grill in the top smaller oven continues to work.
The lights on the oven control panel do not light up and the oven fan does not come on.

    So Far:
I have pulled out the oven and removed a small plate at the back.
This exposes the electric distribution bits.
Also visible is a small circuit board (purpose unknown). It looks OK - nothing obviously fried.
The board says it is a PEKTRON 1997 and has an OMRON CONTACT mounted on it.
    Also a large resistor (??) R3.
Looking into the ovens I can see the thermostats (but not the heating elements!!). I have no idea where they are - sides? bottom?

Given all of the above I would appreciate any suggestions as to how to proceed. Likely causes?
I have reasonable competence with electrics.

    Thank you

    Gerry

is the oven switched to manual
if its on automatic it wont function

Yes it might be in auto mode alright, there is usually a button beside the timer display with a hand symbol on it. It usually needs to be pressed anytime the power to the cooker goes off from the cooker isolator on wall.

Thats the first thing to check.

GREAT thinking!! Why didn't I think of that?
Of course, if it thinks it's on AUTO then neither oven will operate.
    So far so good.

BUT now when I power the cooker on, the clock blinks at 00:00 and the AUTO indicator also blinks.
The manual tells me to set the time-of-day clock.
But I can't - no pressing of any buttons will change the display.
So something in the control area is knackered.

Any idea where the electronics for that might be located? called?

They all revert back to 00:00when they are powerd off. Any i seen anyway. Just check in the manual book that you are pressing the right buttons to set the time. I never bother setting the time at all. But i think you may have to press 2 buttons together to set it. I forget these days.

I followed the book in detail.
I have often set the TOD previously.
Just now it seems not to work.

You could cheat and turn the cooker wall switch off and back on at midnight:).

Hey. No jokes. This is serious :) No hot meal today!!!

    But thanks for the suggestions.
    Any ideas for a solution?

    Ger.

If you cant change the time using the buttons according to the manual, there must be something wrong with the timer itself or possibly the buttons. They get a bit of grease and water into them sometimes. Replacing the timer section is probably needed if thats the case.

Yes, sort of figured that may be the case.
I'll take it out and give it a clean and inspection.
Looks like an expensive replacement part :(
It's 12 years old so also maybe hard to find.

Thanks again - appreciate your time and help.

time clock only controls the main oven ,should have nothing to do with the operation of the top oven

have you checked the toc (thermal overload cut out )?

    What? what?

What's that? Where would I find it?
A button to reset? Or some fuse-like thing blown?

Don't forget the grill still works?

Damn, I forgot the timer doesn't control the top oven :(
And both ovens are not working.
    Thank you for spotting that!!

No, no, correction to last post.

The timer DOES control both ovens on this model Belling.

But I am still interested to know about a thermal overload thingy.
