I'd say it's Dunnes and other alcohol outlets in the area taking the advice of the local Garda.

Isn't it a sad state of affairs that people simply can't be trusted not to abuse alcohol?

    Hiccough.

Well... you have to understand that we don't really abuse it, we could never abuse it. The problem is that there just isn't enough of it to drink.

I think I'll refrain from telling my foreign colleagues that my compadres have to be 'disciplined' on our own national holiday.:D

By the way I was in Dunnes earlier and they had big signs saying "no alcohol sales until 4pm"

Is this Dunnes just taking their own decision on this or is it based on law ?

Probably just a precaution to promote responsible drinking

What's funnier is that anyone who wants to get booze will find some. And couple that they're open from 4pm till around 2am or 3am, that's a lot of drinking. You'd think they'd learn by now not to drink 24/7 but no, they'll drink all day and all night and pay for it tomorrow.

    Just the one ;)

Fast forward to 2am...you find Elessar off his face with a traffic cone on his head running down the street, attempting to sing Amhrán na bhFiann.

Gah! Maybe I'll stay at home and have a can of the black stuff instead! That might stop my temptation!!

They can't sell alcohol after 10pm by law

I feckin love St Paddy's day.

Just drove to the business park where I work and the gates are locked.

Ah well, I guess I can't go to work. Terrible shame about that. :p

Also, have to say that the Dublin parade looked really good this year. Nice theme from Roddy Doyles book 'Brilliant'.

that is correct, so we can get drunk all day instead. *hic*

I meant the types of clubs that will let you in if you have money; regardless of the fact you're legless and can barely stand.

I don't remember anyone mention Cork in this thread?

Anyway, there's nothing wrong with enjoying the day. By all means, spend all day in the pub or drink throughout the day. Just don't aim to get amazingly drunk.

Most people won't care if others drink all day today nor if people spend it all day in the pub.

The problem most people have with this holiday is that while we could be going out and having about 6 pints or so, the scumbags do ruin it and rather than have an 8 pack or something, they have the 8 pack of cans, continue drinking, wait till the clubs open, go to town and start smashing the place and causing trouble when it's closing time because they can't use their own free will to refuse to stop drinking when it's obvious they're far too drunk.

Are you saying people who think like that are scumbags, or that amount of drink brings out the scumness in alot of people?

Moreso that the amount of alcohol they consume brings it out. Of course, letting yourself get that drunk isn't the most intelligent of ideas.

I'll make it a bit clearer to the other post. :)

Basically, if you know you're a bad drunk and still aim (not just having a few drinks and getting drunk) to get very drunk, you shouldn't be let near alcohol.

But when you combine immaturity with high amounts of alcohol it never works out well.

Well that would be because Cork is overrun with hairy eared yokels whose average day is getting pissed before 11am and kicking the ****e out of each other. So you wouldnt notice the difference...like!

Agree with you, but theres plenty of people capable of drinking 8 cans before having a few pints in the pub then nightclub and not causing any trouble!

    Working in a while, little or no celebration in this central Illinois town. I'll rebel against dress code and wear my Irish flag t-shirt. :) Miss the parades of my youth. ;_;

Oh, yeah, I know that. It was just more of a go at the fact that some people are incapable of being drunk without it ending up causing trouble.

What are you drinking? I'd say stay with spirits and a mixer if your stomach isn't feeling good.

Happy debauchery day everybody. Have the fires started in dublin yet? My day has been decidedly un-irish. Might watch darby o'gill later though. Any other emigrants celebrating in style?

Normally cans and a somewhat empty stomach (maybe a bit of a sandwhich) and I'm fine. Weird how it works out. Maybe you're too old? :D

Get a good meal, give it about 30 minutes and see how you feel. If the same, either grin and handle it or else just get some spirits from the offie?

Bro- How are you liking it?
Me - meh. Probably wouldn't like it if I were sober

You need to get back into the swing of things. Might suggest stealin' the nearest car, sucking the petrol from it and seeing if that helps? :D

Enjoy your day... non-Irish style. :p

Don't let your body boss you around! You get that 10 liter bottle of ethanol and drink it, teach your body to obey you.

Might wanna call the hospital first, though. :)
