What residential locations in Victoria would be suitable for a max half-hour commute to Geelong Waterfront Campus by public transport, bike or on foot? Car is not an option. Starting March 2012.

In particular are there areas in Melbourne or on the east side of the bay that would allow such a commute? Is there a ferry, for example?

Geelong is about an hour from Melbourne by car so your only option would be accommodation in Geelong itself I would imagine.

No idea what (if any) public transport there is in Geelong though.

Yeah I reckon you should live in geelong. East Melbourne is way to far

    Thanks.

I had mentioned the east side of the bay without reference to the map of the Port Phillip area.

I was hoping there might be some possibilities other than Geelong, since I haven't had much luck yet with sourcing long-term accommodation there.

From comments made elsewhere I am forming the impression that public transport in the region is not the best, and that lots of people are car-dependent.

    Shared accom link for Geelong:
    http://www.share-accommodation.net/preview/looking/geelong/index.htm
you could check domain or realestate for solo rentals

transport from Melbourne would be via VLine
    http://www.metlinkmelbourne.com.au/assets/PDFs/maps/Vline-Regional-Network-Map.pdf
but that would be a serious commute and you would really want to have a flexible timetable or it'll be hard yakka
    essentially like Dublin to Dundalk

    In Geelong you have
    http://www.metlinkmelbourne.com.au/assets/PDFs/maps/Geelong-maps/Geelong-Bus-Network.pdf

West Melbourne suburbs are amidst the industrial heartland of the city so yes a lot of people are car dependent and it's less populated than east side so public transport may be less frequent.
The newer estates in Point cook, Sanctuary lakes, Werribee would be highly car reliant.

The only ferry is Sorrento-Queenscliff and tbh that's a tourist thing essentially with prices that match

    hope it helps
