scholes has the personality of a piece of cardboard - like most footballers. Cantona, i'd understand as he had unique character whit translated to his football. but his ego is a bit :o .. i see why you go scholes maybe.

i'd go Drogba; great life story big character and still essential to his team at 33. could probs continue til 40 - must be gutted a liability like torres is in favour, what a spineless overrated clown

I'll give you Scoles and the cardboard analogy. He's one of the greatest players ever to play in the premiership though and is modest. Up there with the likes of Zola.

Drogba is a very good player, but he's a cheat and falls over like a dope. He actually puts me off watching football. Torres is a completely different type of player, and is simply one of the top four strikers in the world.

Agree with Olly, how can anyone like Drogba's personality?? Biggest moaner and a diving cheat. Saw him live at the 2006 World Cup and, for a huge huge man, was constantly falling to the ground and crying and moaning. Anyone who admires that is misguided in my opinion

This guy is a class act.
MASHANTUCKET — At a press conference announcing one of the biggest fights of his career, middleweight boxer Sergio Martinez on Thursday promised viewers they would see “the best Sergio Martinez.” Then, pausing, he added, “This fight is for you, Monique,” and invited 13-year-old Middletown resident Monique McClain on stage.

When Martinez fights Sergiy Dzinziruk for the middleweight World Boxing Council Diamond Championship on Saturday, he’ll be doing it for the city seventh-grader, he said.

McClain was forced to leave Woodrow Wilson Middle School in January because of relentless bullying by her classmates. Since then, she’s been trying to keep up with her studies from home. Her family has asked the Middletown Board of Education to provide her with a tutor or place her in another school district. So far, they haven’t had any luck.

On Thursday, Martinez invited Monique, her mother, Alycia, and grandmother, Alexa, to join him and his team at a restaurant at Foxwoods Resort Casino before the press conference. On Saturday, McClain and her mother have V.I.P seats to watch the fight.

“It’s very important to show her support for what she’s going through,” Martinez said in the restaurant, speaking in Spanish with his agent, Sampson Lewkowicz, translating.
The boxer called Monique “a champion,” and explained that he knew the consequences of bullying firsthand, since he was bullied as a child in Argentina.

“It’s a major problem,” he said, adding that both bullies and their parents should be held responsible for their actions, because both bullies and their victims could face lingering problems throughout their lives. “It’s not only your problem, it’s the community’s problem.”

Martinez listened intently as he heard from the McClains about the challenges Monique have faced at school. The bullying, they explained, started in September after Monique had her hair braided, and got worse throughout the school year.

Along with emotional support, Martinez brought gifts, including signed photos, a T-shirt and autographed patches Monique can put on her boxing jacket. Continued...

this about personality or sporting achievement? and whether they grew up in less priviledged circumstance

Drog's ego ha a lot to to with being treated as a demi-god in Africa but his effectiveness particularly at his age, are impressive

but i will stick with Katie Taylor. don't wanna go the footie / premiership route

Suprised no one has metioned John Terry or Steven Gerrard. Both inspirational leaders on and off the pitch.
Terry: certain to be up roaring and swearing in the ref's face following every single decision, wrong or right, that goes against Chelsea.

Gerrard: Dark-horse contender for diver of the century.

True men of honesty and integrity.

I like him on FIFA 11 if that counts for anything. He still does the good stuff heading/shooting etc but in the game you can't do any diving or moaning so the resemblance is only minimal.

What a 42 carot plonker you really are. Ronnie, for all his mental problems remains one of the greatest and most entertaining snooker players. You can only admire many of the Rocket's performances doen through the years and hope that he's around for a few more years to come.

Padraig Harrington, wrecks your head watching him sometimes (especially lately) but is one of the hardest working players in the game.

Kevin Kilbane, gives it everything hes got and seems like a sound man.

Eamonn O'Hara, Probably the best footballer Sligo have ever had and still making a good contribution at 35.

Also Padraig Joyce, I remember him single handedly bringing Galway back into the match against Sligo last year, when without him they would have been f*cked.

The sports people i really like are Brian O'Driscoll. He is such an inspiring person. Ireland greatest ever sports person and a fine ambassador for Ireland. I also love the likes of Cristiano Ronaldo and Zlatan Ibrahimovic. They are great, they know it and they will tell you all about how great they are. The likes of Scholes etc bore the pants off me. Football would be a more entertaining place with more of the likes of Ronaldo and Zlatan rather than bores like Scholes.

Matt Hamill - Deaf fighter in the UFC.
Tom Brady - Patriots Quarterback. Such a cool levelheaded bloke who has respect and time for everybody.
    Chuck Norris - Legend.

Donnacha O'Callaghan is a good one, the story about him leading the ducks from a nearby pond (I think it was ducks) into a team meeting with breadcrumbs is quality.

You are the misguided one. Drogba is one of the worlds most inspiring sports people on the planet. He was in the Time Magazine Top 100 people last year for his charity work. He is one of the most amazing people in sport. Im not going to go through the stuff he has done. you do that, you do some homework because its badly needed.

Thierry Henry - Arsenal legend, the greatest player I have ever seen play.

Dennis Bergkamp - was lucky enough to meet him, was very nice.

Alan Smith, very approachable and always willing to talk about The Arsenal.

    Johnny Wilkinson - top player.

If you knew half of the stuff he does for charities in England, France and the Ivory Coast, you'd know why people like him...
Thousands of kids in Africa get a good education because of that man. You might not like how he acts on the pitch, but off it he is an absolute hero.

The guy is a disgrace and a cheat. If it were any other sport he'd be banned for a few years with his antics. Who exactly is he inspiring? Fair play to him on his charity work though. Credit where credit is due. The guy is still cheat though.
