you know how much of his life he has spent doing that little constipated wiggle of concentration? most of it, practicing those kicks. any day / anywhere / any opportunity, he is a nurd for it. and he couldn't kick shít yesterday

meh has been blighted by injury, coming towards the end of his career now, but has been a top player and someone who always stayed behind after training to get extra practice, and a world cup winner.

Anyway its "sports star's you actually like " ;)

Seriously? The guy's the quintessential cúnt.

have you ever met him?

he is the complete opposite of what you would think from seeing him in interviews. an out and out gent

Craig Bellamy has spent several hundred thousand pounds in Sierra Leone, setting up a football academy where kids are barred from playing if they skip school or don't do community work. He isn't from Sierra Leone; two friends of his were there and told him about it when they came home. Now he's spending two weeks there every summer and plans to spend well over a million pounds on it before he's done.

I don't care if he gets in rows; hell, I don't care if he switches sports, gets signed by a Magners League team and manages to break both Jonathan Sexton and Ronan O'Gara before the World Cup. That's someone who's making a big difference in the world for the better, no matter what he does on a pitch.

You are the misguided one. Drogba is one of the worlds most inspiring sports people on the planet. He was in the Time Magazine Top 100 people last year for his charity work. He is one of the most amazing people in sport. Im not going to go through the stuff he has done. you do that, you do some homework because its badly needed.

I'm afraid i'm not misguided, my comment was made in full knowledge of Drogba's charity work. I think you'll find that every sportsman mentioned on this thread does charity work. So?
Also, where the aforementioned guys gain their credibility is by the actions they perform when the world is watching ie on the field of play. Somewhere Didier hopelessly falls short

Andriy Shevchenko.
One of the highest goal scorers in UEFA club competition history. One of the best strikers of the last 20 years and all round nice guy.
He funds a network of orphanages in the ukraine and belarus, runs a few football academies (with schools) and has built a few schools around eastern europe.
Even managed to get tight fisted pricks like Belrusconi and Abramovic to give a few million to charities for orphanages in eastern europe.

Paolo Maldini. No explainaction needed.

Everyone in football breaks the rules. Whether its a pull on the shirt, a cynical foul or even trying to break the offside trap early. Its all cheating. Everyone cheats. Even Gary Lineker cheated and sure most of the absurd amount of "asthmatic" footballers are cheats as well.

Metallitroll what's with the shocked reply? Do you think Drogba is a true sportsman like Giggs, Scholes, Zidane, Iniesta, Messi etc?? Really?
I remember him crying over not being allowed to take a penalty by the regular taker Frank Lampard last season. Drogba wanted to finish top scorer and, despite the game being in the balance, wanted to disturb Lampard. Such a me feiner

Zidane was a petulant thug. Any time he was out played he resorted to punching, high tackles, headbuts and spitting.
Great player, but an absolute scumbag.

do you not realize how essential Drogba is to chelsea? it wasn't just what's effectively the opposing side's 12th man torres leaving the field, it was ancelloti again realizing "this guy is never gonna work, another day / another chance maybe" and putting the main man on. and what; the goals came. just like its been the past few games - Drogba's aura alone on the field seems to be enough, he radiates that special something. some folk just have it, where others have to work their socks off just to get noticed

John Higgins, My favourite Snooker player, Although I lost a bit of respect for him over the match fixing scandal.

Paul Galvin, OK hes a bit of an eeijit, But a fantastic footballer.

Henrik Larsson, One of the best natural finishers ever and also for saying to opposition defenders 'I was with your wife last night and it was damn fine'

Troy Polamalu, Tough little b@stard, Seems like a nice fella too.

Brian Dooher, Inspirational player, covers every position at some stage during a game.

I'll list a few here from a few different sports that I follow:

Paul Scholes - Great player (poor tackler) , modest. Nothing like the players nowadays. Once said his ideal day is; "Train in the morning, pick up my children from school, play with them, have tea, put them to bed and then watch a bit of TV" which is really cool.

Tony McCoy - Great jockey, won the lot. Consistent. Tee-totaler is a sport that is heavily involved with alcohol.

Roger Federer - Great player, great battles with both older and younger players. Keeps me amazed in a sport I that wouldn't be my favourite.

Wes Welker - American Footballer, great reciever that was passed over coming out of college. Makes great plays and generally goes unnoticed beside some of his team mates.

Darragh Ó Sé - Great footballer through the past two decades. Has always been there for Kerry. A rock for them over the years and his medal count shows.

I have a lot of respect for a lot of the GAA players as well.

I think Brian O'Driscoll is an exemplary sportsperson. Given his level of success and repertoire of skills, he could easily have trotted down the flash egotist route yet he continues to represent his club and country with dignified modesty, flair and a terrific sense of humour. A great ambassador for our country, Ireland needs more of him

Ali - Simply the best

Johnney Doyle - A superb player in an amatuer sport

Giggs - At the top of his game for over 20 years amazing

Scholes - Just seems like a cool guy

Messi - I thought i'd never see anyone that could be better than Maradona Genius

i didn't even see this last night. forgot about it

mortified, he was prepared for it in the gym across the road. are irish 'foighters' in boxing mostly myth? i mean even Dunne took a lot of hype and preparation, all home soil fights with baying mobs n that but at least he's relatively sharp and managed to beat some stick for a title.. which he never retained of course - and collins was immense, n the clones lad who beat a past it tyson but..

where's the beef?!

there are some very good irish boxers. Andy Lee is probably the best, pound for pound, in a long time and is only a fight or two away from a world title shot.
The fight he 'lost' was stupid, the ref never should have stopped it,s but since then he's been impressive. His knockout punch on McEwien the other night was perfect.

By the time he left the England set up he was; a) Played out of position or b) Left completely out of the team. He said he wanted to concentrate more on his club and family life. He'd done his time.

When he was asked to come back in the summer, its showed the poor quality of the England team. He was asked the day the squad was named, not given enough time to think about it and talk about it with the family. It was a decision which he regrets though

i guess our hopes are on andy lee so.. particularly if its a home fight; though i see he has a good record abroad - never forget how big an advantage it is with a load of vocal partisan nutters shadowboxing in the aisles baying for blood

If Andy gets a title fight, it will be in the US. He's based there.
He could defend it here. But he'd never get a shot at a title in Limerick/Dublin.

If he gets a title, I'd expect him to defend it in the US a few times and then have a fight in either UL or The Point.

plying his trade in the states is the ideal preparation for a title shot, i don't see him being permitted him to fight in ireland when it comes to the crunch either - advantageous partisan nonsense, at the most clinical stage

but then, thats fairly typical of boxing isn't it - crowd / moneyspinner

Brian O Driscoll, he has been the hero for Ireland over the years.
Michael "Brick" Walsh, Waterford Hurler, was in school with him and he is such a sound guy, never let the hype go to his head.
Joe Canning, Galway Hurler, another guy who seems to didnt let the hype go to his head.
Bernard Dunne, used to hate him before, thought he was a cocky git, but i gradually started to like him.

Somebody mentioned Drogba and John Terry, i dont agree they are nice people, two tramps is all they are, one likes to dive, the other likes to ride his team mate's wife.

LOL,

He is nicknamed Stevie MEE for a reason you know? He is a diving, xenophobic Hypocrite, who does everything to benefit himself rather than the Liverpool team..Has held the club to ransom while flirting with Chelsea on more than one occasion..
This is simply par for the course with modern day footballers which is why it is very hard to find one very likeable..

At least Torres is honest about his reasons for leaving, IMO if Gerrard was still a top player (which he most defiantly is not) he would have followed Torres out the door to a decent team.

Look for the video on youtube called Steven Gerrard the Hypocrite..

I have attempted to read his book but I couldnt finish it, he comes across as a whingin little prick!!

Got to agree on Giggs even though I'm a 'Pool fan.

As a fanatical Munster and Ireland supporter, Johnny Wilkinson is another 'Giggsy'. When Newcastle played Thomond Park a few years back, he held the team bus for an hour or 2 signing autographs. The man keeps going, no matter the injury.

My all time favourite though is MJ. Not the one who plays with kids... The The GOAT (greatest of all time), Michael Jordan.

Ryan Giggs?

http://www.highbeam.com/doc/1G1-61074400.html
Soccer ace Ryan Giggs won't be charged over his violent attack on ex-lover Davinia Murphy.

The battered Hollyoaks star said last night that she wouldn't be making a formal complaint to police.

Manchester United and Welsh winger Giggs lashed out at Davinia in a packed nightclub.

He punched her in the face and stomach, leaving her with blood pouring from a suspected broken nose.

Davinia, 19, needed hospital treatment after being sent sprawling.
