Anyone know anything about the Music soc at all?

  • Registered Users Posts: 66 ✭✭Fraher91

They have a room to themselves in the SU. You don't have to be good at music to join, you can use instruments, equipment they use. I assume they go to see bands or something as well. Again depends on your interest i suppose, i wouldn't be as interested in them asin other clubs/societies.

The one thing i regret is not taking an active role in the history soc in semester one. There were a good few things going: Mystery tour, Diarmuid ferriter lecture, bunratty banquet, dublin weekend trip etc, so great looking things. Great thing is, i'll be more determined to get stuck in come september. I remember Ruan Dmc saying during orientation to really get involved in the clubs/societies, he wasn't wrong!

You should join ULTV, The media production society. Podcast was filmed every wednesday last semester and it was really fun, basically doing random stuff in front of a camera and posting it on youtube
    Check it out!
    http://www.youtube.com/user/ULTVSOC

We actually did a club and socs roundup at the end of most of the podcasts so if you want a taster of what the different clubs and socs do we did interviews with trampolining, krav maga, trad soc and archery

next semester if you want a club or soc featured or if you want to find out more about ultv email us at ultvsoc@gmail.com

also debating is cool and trad soc has a session in scholars every wednesday

UL Ladies Rugby Club is a great club to join and cater for women of all abilities, who want to try something new and different for their fitness and well being. Most people who join at the beginning have never played before but through excellent coaching they learn the game very fast, The club is so welcoming and love getting new players from all disciplines, years and also study abroad and Erasmus students.
ULLR have a big emphasis on team bonding through social events such as trips away to activity centres/boot-camps/Irish Matches but also on more localised activities such as cinema nights, themed nights out, dvd evenings, party s and much much more.
UL Ladies Rugby is a very successful club on the pitch also; they have won the intervarsities 12/13 years and the League 10/11 years with this year being one of their most successful seasons to date winning the League, varsities, Cusai 7's and the All Ireland Student 7's. The club has also been the starting point for many Irish Internationals with more than 15 past and present Internationals have all began playing in UL since the clubs foundation in 1998.
With the huge social aspect of the club it caters for absolutely everyone and one is guaranteed to make many many friends for life through this club :):) UL Ladies Rugby is not affiliated with any AIL club team so members play for many different clubs including UL Boh's, Shannon, Young Munster, Nenagh, Fermoy, Crosshaven, Eniscorthy, Kilkenny City, Clonmel and many more :)

UL Drama is worth checking out

This year we had 3 productions - Raise the Roof (a musical melody), Love is Merely A Madness (A collection of Shakesperean scenes) and Don't Tell Mama (a varity show with a tabo theme). We had weekly workshops on dramatic skills as well as special guest workshops on Improv, Stage Fighting and Movement. We've had several trips to see plays both in Limerick and beyond. Our members got to take part in all kinds of events from live performances, short films, road safety demonstrations and even a puppet show for kids

Next year we hope to have more of the same dramatic madness plus much much more. Drama soc is a great way to improve your confidence and make loads of friends. And don't worry if your not the dramatic type- we're always looking for people who are interested in the technical side of theater as well.

Why not check us out on facebook

Anybody here from Debating society, just wondering what do ye do for the social side of it?

  • Registered Users Posts: 272 ✭✭mulner92

Looking at the events your faculty holds during the semester is a good way to get to know people and to talk to lecturers you may have in the following years. I was at a history function in plassey and it was an enjoyable event with a few students and members of faculty. I'd always keep an eye on upcoming events particularly things to do with history and politics.

Yup, Ex El Presidente of these lot! Basically we run events (Fight like Apes: U.L Live Oct 2010), meeting weekly, pints, lessons, botb, open mics, have a practice space rigged out with two valve amp, Harke 3500 bass amp stack, Roland electric drums and a good P.a! Also have a "big" P.a for events!

You don't have to play to be involved!

We can teach you how to engineer, play an instrument, promote and get you to know the best music spots in the city! If your in a band we've some handy contacts!:D

here's the email for more info ulmusicsoc@gmail.com

You could always join the airsoft society! We only got it set up this year but we are already going to matches every fortnight (In semester) Its great craic and we can provide all the gear you need if you don't have it yourself!
Just look for the guys walking around ul with the rifles, or full camoflauge.
Check out our facebook page ul airsoft for pictures or if you have any questions.

What i like about the History society, is that the history faculty gets involved too. They're not detached from it and encourage people to join.

  • Registered Users Posts: 516 ✭✭✭Skyrim

Definitely will make more of an effort in history and debating societies next year and sample one or two more, as one poster remarked don't just drink the college days away, get involved in the clubs/societies, may never get an opportunity again.

Anybody know when the planning for the recruitment drive takes place? Must get along to that this year and sign up to a few clubs/societies properly.

generally clubs and socs won't be preparing for the recruitment drive until they get back in the new semester or just before hand

make sure to pre-register for which ever club or soc you are interested in before the recruitment drive and you maybe able to sign up anytime with many of the C&S and not just on the day of the recruitment drive

info relating to sign up etc is available here http://www.registercs.ul.ie/

and keep windsurfing in mind!! :D

Social side of DebU: We regularly enter IV's that take us all over Ireland, usually on a Friday and Saturday. Normally socials are held there and once the competitive side is over, the banter is mighty!! We also attend IV's in England and Scotland. Everyone is quite friendly in debating circles and most people know each other from IV's.

We also socialise as a Society, we regularly host private members motions nights where we just pick something we want to talk about, could be anything and I mean anything, and just get up there and do it. They normally are brilliant fun. Afterwards, we head to Scholar's. We run competitons within the society too and for Hallowe'en this year we had a fancy dress and spoke in our characters!

Perhaps some of the most fun events we've had are our House Debates on a Thursday night. These involve getting in some guest speakers and debate on a topic in their area. At the beginning of Semester One last year we had a glamour model debate, involving a model and the Journalist Julie Bindal. Later in the year we had the then Minister Eamon O Cuiv and Senator David Norris also. The Civil Partnership debate was fantastic and filled the Swift Theatre. We sometimes get lecturers in as well and they are really great fun too!!

Our Speaker Devoplement on a monday night is a great way to make friends in the society and teaches you the style involved in Debating. Head to Scholars afterwards for a chat and introduction to new members. I would totally recommend joining, I met some of my closest friends in college though DebU :)

    Hope this helps :)

Also C & S Recruitment is normally in week 1 on semester one in the Arena! :)

Sounds terrific lad, hope to be involved in it from the get go in september. Debu, Irish Soc and one of the political societies are the priorities :P

Can the history soc confirm whether or not we will be going to bunratty this semester? Going on co-op in january so depending on where they place me, could make it difficult.

I hopefully will be starting in UL this year and there's so many cool societies to join but obviously I can't be apart of them all can i?

    I was thinking:

    Debating
    Sub Aqua
    Trampoline
    Mountain Biking
    Windsurfing*
    Kayaking*
    Sky Diving*

The ones with a star will probably only be for one or two goes just to try them things out as I have always wanted to do them, but I will be looking for a strong weekend club too :)

You could well join all of them :P Bear in mind if you join too many you could well be overwhelmed by it all and not go to any (what happened me :P )

    Good choice with debating, though.

  • Registered Users Posts: 66 ✭✭Fraher91

I'd say focus on three or four because any more clubs, you wouldn't be able to enjoy fully. Coming in to first year last september, i had high hopes for the history society but we didn't meet up very often. Thinking of joing a political society when i go back, not for politics mostly for socialising and making friends.

  • Registered Users Posts: 125 ✭✭roseagra

Well RHunce I went to join windsurfing in 1st year thinking I'd try it once or twice.....five years on, into a masters and the one constant? the windsurfing club, great bunch of people and great sport and it only costs a fiver to join but you are very welcome to join and only try it once or twice.....but I think after you meet our mentalers and try the sport you might stay around longer, also bear in mind we brought a group of beginners to egypt last jan for 10 days of windsurfing and general fun

advice for sub aqua too, you need to be there early with the cost of joining in hand as they fill up quickly, they can't take lots of new members unless you have a previous diving cert as it takes about the year to train you up via the club training path

and if you have any questions shout away and I know most people in the other clubs and socs, you will have a ball!

Defo go with Trampolining!!! I'm in it and it's awesome!! (Hows that for vested interest advertising).

No seriously, your from Limerick we are doing a 24 hour Guiness record breaking attempt out in Delta tomorrow. Its on from 1pm tomorrow afternoon to 1pm saturday afternoon. Come out and ask one of the Trampoliners for Dave or Frenchy (both are me) and we'll throw you up on the trampoline for a laugh!!! Teach you some of the simple stuff and then you can see if you like it or not !! :)
