Thanks doozerie, the article gives you a basic explanation of why this particular colour lens and when...
The conclusion in the article seemed to be that you want to go for a pair of glasses that have at least 3 types of lens: clear, smoke/grey for bright days and amber/orange for rainy days. Blue lens, according to the author, are not a great choice for cycling.
Also it suggests to go for polycarbonate lens, which are usually shatterproof.

In the end I went for these dhb triple lens sold by Wiggle. They seem to tick all the boxes and meet my budget. They will certainly be better than my current 2.99 euro LIDL shades.
    Hopefully they are good...

I use something very similar to these, cheap safety glasses for less than 5 euros. I don't see why you need to spend a fortune on glasses.

My dad used to swear by the stuff for his motorcycle helmet. I use them on my prescription sunglasses and my car. Great stuff. However, follow the instructions on the back. Most people apply it wrong and it looks crap.

4.50 a bottle in Tescos and the bottle will last for years if your only looking to do your sunglasses.

I have a pair of these... and find them great. They don't smog up and are great in rain as they dry up in superfast time (especially cycling into the wind!).

I got a set from Decathlon in Belgium that has 4 sets of lenses. I've only ever worn the clear ones in winter on the MTB and never used the yellow ones. I think they were about 30 euro - can't find a link to them and can't see any on the Belfast site
