Download sections of Google maps to avoid data charges?

    Is there a way to download sections of google maps to your phone to avoid data charges when using it as a sat nav?

    I have a Sony Xperia X8.

    Yes, the latest version caches map squares.

    It just caches what you browse on the app. It doesn't even take up much. HTC has went one step further in their new phones to offer to download maps for the region you want.
    The map data isn't that large. Think Ireland sums up to around 30mb

    That's a good question, I haven't used it much but it would be handy if it could plan a route and cache the squares before setting off for example.
    Maybe it can, I don't know...

    Hmm, just tried a Hotel in Trim and it leads me to Clonmel... Not good..

    Is there no android app that does this. Seem a bit of a problem if you are used to to free offline OVI maps.
