Offering myself for Voluntary Redundancy

    Hi,
I am currently in a job where my role is pretty much no longer required. I am in a position where the company I work for dont really know I have nothing to do and I want to now offer myself up for redundancy. I want to move away and work and statutory redundancy would suit me perfectly to have enough to get up and go.
The thing is, how do I bring this to my employer. Do I literally sit down with them and say "make me redundant"? Would they not think it a bit strange someone asking to be let go?
I would really appreciate any advice on this and has anyone ever done the same?

    Thanks
    Jack
