Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

I have a laptop, its been a bit dodgy a while, the backlight would go dim all the time and it would stop charging....{chargers fine}... the problem was the part you put the charger pin into on/inside the back of the laptop. It recently stopped charging altogether, and the battery died so the pc turned off, i brought it to a guy as i thought i needed the part you put the charger into fixed/replaced....he told me the motherboard was broken.

Id appreciate and info, from you guys including opinion,s on what you,d say the issue is and a link to a similar problem,s post {on any site} if you know of one.

I hav to go out now so sorry if i dont answer replies till tommorrow morning, thanks in advance.:)

Do you mind me asking why you doubt the opinion of the technician?

just because i believe if it was a broken motherboard that the laptop would have just powered off instantly.....it didnt i shut it down normally.....and when i press the power button an orange light flashes to tell me the battery is dead....would the light do this if the motherboard was broken?......

    Probably.

When the computer is running on battery power, if the power socket is broken, and as long as it's not shorting any other circuit, the computer should function normally (provided there is enough battery power to power the laptop).

It's a common issue, any lateral stress on the charger connection whilst plugged into the laptop will reduce the integrity of the connection on the motherboard. Depending on how roughly the laptop has been treated will depend on how bad the damage to the motherboard will be. In extreme cases, the circuit board will break; solder connections are normally stronger than the circuit board. If you're lucky, the power port connections may have come loose, and it may just need a new connector and/or resoldering. Only way to know is to open it yourself (or the technician) and have a look, or ask the technician to take photos. Easy fix, if you know what you're doing, plenty of guides on the internet on how to do it. Takes a bit of time though, so you'd probably be quoted a couple of hours work to have repaired. Cost of replacement socket probably a couple of € at the most.

if your really careful you could try re solder the power jack connector to fix it.

Most repair shops arent going to dick around with soldering. They will have you replace the motherboard. Thats what the tech was probably telling you.

so you guys think it could be repaired by fixing the power connector or putting a replacement power connector on the motherboard, that the motherboard itself is most likely ok?

Without seeing what it looks like, it's impossible to gauge whether the power connector needs to be resoldered, whether it needs to be replaced, and/or some extra work needs to be done to possibly repair a broken circuit board or traces.

Even if the board is broken in that area, there are a few ways of tacking the fix, like glueing back the board, reinforcing it in position, and then repairing/replacing the traces, or even installing an external connector that's wired into where it needs to go - you'll see examples if you if you search on google.

However, this all depends on you having the tools and experience to do the job, and weighing against the cost of a new laptop, new motherboard, how quickly you need the laptop functional again, or if you can find someone to do the job for you. There are specialists that do this sort of work, but I have no idea how much they would charge for this type of work.

Like I said, cheap, easy fix, if you have the tools and experience, expensive if you have to find someone to do the job for you.

    UPDATE::D

Brought it phone wiz on moore street, ive dealt with them before and have seen them doing some rediculously complicated work, including disasembling iphones and takeing parts from broken one,s and replaceing......so i thought if the guy who told me the motherboard was broke, might not know his stuff that the guy,s in phonewiz would....

Straight away they told me that it,s probly the power jack and it,d take 2 hours to replace for 60 euro....and if there was a problem with the motherboard they would tell me and give me options on what i can do.

Well i left it there for 2 hours..came back and the guy had replaced the power jack, and had it chargeing...told me there was no problem with the motherboard...and gave me a 1 month warranty.......

If anyone has any problem at all pc or phone related id suggest going to phonewiz...its right before the ilac centre when you go on to moore street from henry street.

P.S...thanks to all who replied with info/advice...

funny thing...i went on youtube to see a vid of what exactly needs to be done when replaceing the power jack....and the laptop was the exact same as mine...lol.
