How to pluralize this sentence?

"Most peoples' wives have the same last name as their husband"

"Most peoples' wives have the same last name as their husbands"

"Most peoples' wives have the same last names as their husbands"

There are other permutations of s's and apostrophes but I'm pretty sure it's one of these three. The truth of the sentence doesn't matter, it's just something I made up as an example ;)

And while we're at it, is "s's" the correct plural of "s?"

    no, it is:

Most people's wives have the same last name as their husband's.

(the word people is plural so the apostrophe is before the s ;)

'Last names' implies more than one name each. 'Last name' is one per case. IMHO.

That doesn't sound right to me. Should it not be...?

Most wives take their husband's surname.
