    Hi,

After reading posts on this forum i decided to start a thread about what happens after med school.

I'm not 100% sure what happens after other than Internship. I know thats in the NCHD category.
But after internship what do you become?
    Are there more exams?
How long does it take to become a consultant or surgeon or GP?
What are the starting salaries for NCHDs like?
What are the hours for NCHDs?
Does life get easier or harder when you're a consultant?
How often are you on call or required to stay all night?

Before anyone launches a verbal attack on me, no I don't know these things as nobody talks about them before you decide to go for medicine. Nobody talks about it to us college. And students are clueless about it unless they've a doctor in the family (which i haven't). And yes I'm aware I've entered a difficult profession, and yes I was aware of that before I put it on my CAO.

Thanks, hope someone can answer my questions!

    Hi,

You are qualified as a doctor but cannot practice independently.
    Are there more exams?

Yes. All specialities will require further basic specialist exams. Typically taken over 1-3 years after finishing internship; usually there are 2 or 3 for each speciality.
How long does it take to become a consultant or surgeon or GP?

Specialist: 8-14 years, after you complete medical school (medicine, surgery, psychiatry, etc., )
General Practice: 5-6 years, after you complete medical school

Note that to get qualified to be a specialist or GP doesn't necessarily mean you will get work as a specialist or GP. Consultant is simply the term used for the type of employment when employing people who have completed specialist training in any area. These days it is more accurately an Employee, and not Consultant (that may change).
