Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

So I took the funny notion of taking up running in January and am now contemplating taking part in the Dublin Marathon this year. I've never ran anything above 10k and was wondering if anyone wanted to share some tips on preparation.

Also if anyone is training for this and wants a partner the odd weekend around the Dublin 15 direction then give me a shout.

There'll be a mentored thread for novice marathon runners starting in a few weeks, and there are regular long slow runs in Phoenix Park on the weekends (see the Group Training sessions thread in the main forum) that are open to everyone.
For now, keep running steadily 3/4 times a week. Do a longer run once a week, building up the miles very slowly (one mile every two weeks would be fine) and do that longer run very slowly, about a minute per mile slower than you think you should be running.

is it that time already?

In the old A/R/T tradition I nominate raycun to be this year's mentor.

Well, by 'starting' I mean there'll be a thread up where people can express their interest, but the training plan won't kick in until June sometime

The usual crowd of degenerates (why did I even mention them ) are off on some drinking session in Cork this weekend, but they usual post here to tell the rest of us when we should avoid the park.

Well at least I can expect a better class of novices, not last year's bunch of gutter-scrapings :D

There is a thread somewhere with upcoming group meetings, not sure if it's been added to for a while. There is a bit of a lull at the moment, with some people entering taper time for Connemara and some people not into the swing of marathon training yet.
This weekend a lot of people are heading to Mallow, but I'm sure the following weekend, things will start up again.
