Coach Dan van Zyl would have warned against the spectre of complacency given Ulster’s poor recent history in this competition.

Leinster looked to get out of the blocks sharply and let their forwards, led by captain Luke Thompson, take the fight to their hosts.

They were merciless in their approach, right wing Matthew Jungmann exploiting the short side for the opening try and scrum-half Shane Murphy converting as early as the fourth minute.

The solid work of the forwards was rewarded when second row Fionn Gilbert burst over for Murphy to add the extras in the 15th minute.

The impression that the back three looked dangerous on the ball was supported by full-back Diarmuid Egan’s finish down the left hand side for Murphy to convert.

The one-way traffic continued with a penalty from Murphy on the half hour.

Then, Leinster raided down the right-hand side for wing Josh O’Connor to show his pace for Murphy to stretch the lead to an unassailable 31-0 lead at the break.

Thereafter, the accuracy suffered from multiple replacements as Leinster cleared the bench as Gilbert showed up to sell two dummies for his second try.

The game was closed out by replacement prop Jordan Kelly, Murphy making it six out of six conversions to round off an impressive start to the three-match campaign.

In truth, the Clubs have been showing improvement in all their preparatory games and this was proof positive that they are on the right road.

“We had Belvedere College, The Exiles and Blackrock College in the lead-in to the series,” said Team Manager Louis Magee.

“Blackrock was probably the defining one for us, winning that game gave us a decent standard to work from.

“We stuck to our game plan to keep width on our game and work through our processes.

“We made few mistakes in very wet conditions and had the game in hand at half-time.”

Coach Van Zyl will take the show on the road out west to Connacht in Galway next Saturday where the plan is to keep on doing what they have been doing.

“We can’t get too ahead of ourselves. We will focus on Connacht. They are always tough at the Sportsground.”

    At Armagh RFC – ULSTER 0; LEINSTER 45 (F Gilbert 2 tries; M Jungmann, D Egan, J O’Connor, J Kelly try each; S Murphy pen, 6 cons).

Munster’s Under 18 Club side got their Interprovincial campaign off to a winning start as they came from behind to defeat their Connacht counterparts at the CIT Grounds 22-7.
The visitors opened the scoring within six minutes of the kick-off when Billy McVann made a break form a maul following a five-meter lineout to score the game’s opening try and his Ballina Club colleague Craig McCormack converted.

With the wind at their backs for the opening half, Munster began to turn the screw and Charlie O’Doherty opened their account with a try following a ruck inside the visitors’ 22. Conor O’Brien converted to tie the scores at seven points apiece.

Munster took the lead when the ball was spread out to David McNamara following a ruck inside the Connacht 22 and O’Brien added his second conversion.

O’Brien stretched the margin to ten points with a penalty form outside the visitors’ 22 before Craig McCormack missed a penalty for Connacht form outside the home side’s 22 on the stroke of half time.

The only score of the second half came three minutes from time when Ben Daly sprinted from his own 22 after intercepting a Connacht pass to score a try in the corner, which he failed to convert.

Rolling Substitutions being introduced from this week-end as well.

12 changes allowed during the game - All changes count towards the 12 , the only exception being if a Front row receives a Yellow card and another player has to be removed to allow a Front row sub to come on .

However if you've used your 12 changes you can still replace an injured player.

Broadly speaking it should be good as it will allow more players to get game time , but it'll be a challenge for refs to keep track of.

Each team is supposed to have 12 card numbered 1-12 which they give to the ref for each change to keep track , but it could be a lot of admin for a ref during a game.

It isnt actually that hard to look after in a game having refereed quite a few J1/j2 games over the years and each team doesnt bring the 12 cards to a game. Its the home club that keeps the cards and they give the cards on the day to the away team
Its the same as adult rugby with a few exceptions like replace injured player if used the 12 changes

Munster league running well so far. Few games conceded but less than previous years which is great to see.

Connacht leagues being led by usual suspects early on.

Dont know so much about Ulster/Leinster leagues

Irish 18s clubs squad picked for Portugal test and camp next week prepping for that game.

Munster U18 Competitions adjusted to now be U18.5 with immediate effect.

Age range is now 1st July 1999 to 31st December 2001 - Which is a big age range.

From this week-end you could have players that are still 15 years old playing against guys almost 18 and a half.

Nothing wrong with the change in principal but it should have been down at the start of the season in conjunction perhaps with a similar shift at U16 or the introduction of an U17 league.

Doing it now when the leagues are already up and running isn't a great idea in my view..

In smaller clubs some players may have already left the club to play 20's elsewhere but might still be playing with their original team if this had been done at the start of the season.

    Good to see this happens
Means all provinces in youths rugby will have the highest grade of youths rugby being played off the same date for the first time in a few years which hopefully means an all Ireland competition can be played for the first time in a few years and if I had it my way such a final would be played on the aviva main pitch in a double header with the AIL division 1A final.
Yes there is a big age range potentially but it's not the worst issue and clubs should be able to find suitable games if it is an issue like playing some games at under 17 level.
Personally I would have all age groups as u13/14/15/16/17 played off January 1st with u18.5 played off July 1st.
Yes change should have came earlier and why did it come so late? When was it proposed and who proposed the change?
For kids who've moved clubs if the club they've moved to for under 20s doesn't field at under 18 it's an easy move back as they can simply go on loan to their original club stating their new club doesn't field at under 18 level

Wonder if it stays at under 18.5 will we see UCC try enter the league again like they tried at under 19s a few years ago.
NUiG compete in Connacht youths competitions but are different as they compete at all age groups from under 13 to 18.5

There is an All-Ireland Comp this season.. Was announced back in August.

There was no debate/discussion about the change - 1st anyone heard about it was about a week ago with a note from the Rugby committee followed quickly by the official announcement on Monday of this week.

Agree completely with you in terms of harmonisation across the provinces etc. but it's the timing and the lack of any adjustment at the other age groups that I take issue with.

The other provinces all run full U17 leagues - It's a huge leap from U16 to U18.5 and they should have either moved U16 to 16.5 or introduced an U17 comp.

In terms of the players - Any '99 players must formally apply to play at U18.5 to the Branch and if approved they are no longer allowed to play U20/Adult rugby for the rest of the season - So those that changed club for U20 can't come back on loan to play youth for example.

In terms of the players - Any '99 players must formally apply to play at U18.5 to the Branch and if approved they are no longer allowed to play U20/Adult rugby for the rest of the season - So those that changed club for U20 can't come back on loan to play youth for example.
I dont see the issue with this change even with the late notice. It should keep more playing the game this season at least. Under 16 shouldnt move to 16 and a half as on the year works best in nearly all cases. Its nearly a decade since most age groups were played off the middle of the year cut off dates and its been far better since the change(speaking from having played both July 1st and January 1st and coached at January 1st age groups)
And the lack of change at under 16 isnt an issue. Yes other provinces run under 17 competitions but nothing stopping clubs in Munster playing games at under 17 level if there is some of the younger players within under 18.5 level who are not up to playing that level.
An under 17 competition can be introduced in time. Better to change 18s first and then see if under 17 is necessary than to introduce both.
And if you go on loan to play 20s you can play with your home/original club as loan is only for under 20 grade. Having used this rule to play 20s when my own club wasnt fielding at 20s i know this as fact.
If any under 18.5s are 18 years of age they can play 20s and adult without any application.
The lack of adjustment at other ages is because it isnt needed there while a change possibly was needed for the under 18 grade.

That's historically been the case , but the instructions regarding the U18.5 change expressly forbid any player who is reclassified as U18.5 from playing U20's or above.

    From the documentation
    1) Applications by clubs must be in writing to the secretary of the rugby committee
    2) All successful applications will be for the whole season
    3) Players playing at U18.5 are not eligible to play at U20 or adult level
    4) Players currently playing U20 will most likely not be considered

That's strange, I played my first 20s rugby while I was u18, there wasn't an issue (or maybe I just got away with it). Wonder why they're doing that, maybe 20s rugby has become much more physical and there are insurance concerns.

U20's is considered "Adult" rugby (Youth/Schools ends at U19) and you are not allowed to move between the two.

You are also not allowed to play Adult Rugby (1st/2nd/3rds etc.) until you have reached your 18th birthday.

The younger U19 players (e.g. those born July-Dec 1999 this season) have been caught in no-mans land for a while now in Munster as they were too old to play youth , but not old enough to play Adult until potentially the end of December.

As a lot of Jnr clubs don't field at U20 these players either left those clubs and went elsewhere for 20's or they simply stopped playing rugby.

So , moving to U18.5 is a great idea in the broad sense but the timing of the change right now is fairly poor for a variety of reasons..

Thats a shame for players suitable and capable of playing 20s.

I did at 17 and there's always been 18s playing 20s. It most likely is insurance issue,

Yes you cant play adult until 18s and yes lots of junior clubs dont field 20s and more should be done like Connacht have done with regular blitz competitions at under 20 competitions for clubs and then these guys can then mix in with adult junior 1/2 competitions and if underage play 18.5s.
You can and have been able to move between the 2. Moving to 18.5s is great and the timing isnt poor as it will allow more to play at the age group.

Schools are in camp this week in Kings Hospital - Was wondering if any squad would come out of that.
