    Have a look here:
    http://social.technet.microsoft.com/wiki/contents/articles/what-to-do-if-your-hotmail-account-is-hacked-or-hijacked.aspx

My advice is if you do regain control then you should probably copy what you need out of it and delete everything in it then set up a new account. The person who has hacked it knows too much about you and this account for you to hold on to it "IF" you regain control. Email your contacts warning them your email account has been hacked and to ignore any emails from it for the foreseeable future (if not forever).

No harm either in downloading malwarebytes free:
    http://www.malwarebytes.org/
Install it, update it and run a full scan on your PC

Forget it, move on. Ignore yer man previous to this, he is confused. Consider the account a loss and move on. been through it a few times with different providers, its more hassle than its worth.

Oh, and move to gmail, setup a google account which has a lot more functionality and benefits.

Glad you waited to help until someone posted. I'm sure the OP appreciates your "input" (or lack of!)
