Don't be worried about asking questions, it's all good! If you click on your friend list on the 3ds (with orange smiley face), you will see who's online at the moment, along with their favourite title and a personal message. Letterbox is a great app to exchange messages and drawings beyween friends, it's great fun once you get the hang of it. You can find it on the eShop.

You have to both add each other, if they just add you, you will not receive any notification of this, and you won't be able to play/send messages.

If you do a system transfer, it stays the same, I'm on my 3rd 3ds and still on my same original FC.
