If you were to adopt an adult dog from someone what paperwork should you get of the owner i.e I presume there is some formal document that confirms its age and number of injections it has had etc.

Adopt - as in from a rescue or from another person?

You can (if the person has kept a record of it) get a record of their vaccinations etc (I have a card that my vet signs every time my dogs get boosters). You could perhaps ask if they could get their vet to transfer the dogs history to the vet you'll be using. I'm not sure if they do that, but I don't really see why they wouldn't.

Unless it's a pedigree and they have the cert, there's no real formal document that would be transferred to you with ownership. There would just be the medical records with the vets and possibly as I said a card marked with vaccinations.

If you are taking a dog from someone who is not the breeder you will need Irish Kennel Club registration (with microchip info) and vaccination certs. Microchip info may be separate to the IKC papers and you will need to make sure you can re register the dog to your name. They should also tell you when the dog is due for worming and de fleaing, and their vet info so that you can get a history.

If it is an adult dog from the breeder you should get an Irish Kennel Club registration, vaccination cert (with stickers), vet info, microchip info and worming schedule should at least be shown to you if not given. You should also see any health certs (and in some cases scans also) from specialist (eg. hip scoring, ECGs etc.) for the parents, and if you want a copy the breeder should be happy to make one for you.

If you are not taking a pure breed - vaccination certs (with stickers) and microchip info is all you will need (plus worming and de fleaing info). Vet info should slso be given if you want to look up their history. Please make sure to register the new dogs chip to you so there could be a serious problem if the dog were to go missing without this done.
