Lad was screaming at me on the way out saying his boss would fire him.

Good, getting away with not doing the work that is paid for should be a sacking.

I don't trust any garage to do a service anymore.

The last time I put my car in for a service I scratched my initials on the oil filter.

Came back after the service with the same oil filter and leaking from the sump.

Checked the air filter and that was manky too.

Basically all they did was charge 99 euros for new oil. didnt bother changing the o-ring, oil filter or air filter.

And the only reason I got it done was becuase they were doing an APK + Servicing deal.

    Retards.

Thats pushing thw whole thing further. If he was happy to put his name to work like that then he doesn't deserve to have the job...

Could well have been operating to the boss' instruction.

Well I've always had my current Passat done by a main dealer (VW Enniskillen mostly) and while not cheap - but cheaper than their counterparts down here - it does give peace of mind because:

    - They're working from a standardised list for each service based on the mileage and using OEM parts and oils
    - They check for any software updates etc (and - admittedly after a little prodding - managed to cure the well-known "stuttering at 14-1800 RPM" issue on the car with a software fix that I'd found on a UK VW forum)
    - I find them a lot easier to deal with and friendlier.. dare I say it, more professional than their southern counterparts?
    - I get a full invoice with the work done that's recorded on the system.. not a hand-scribbled barely legible note in short-hand
    - They even wash the car afterwards .. small touch but NEVER had it done by the dealer I bought the car from

Sure it means a day off work and hours of browsing the shops (or maybe I'll just bring a laptop next time and an extended battery :)) but I can't fault them yet.

I will not buy a car without a Full -insert brand- DEALER/SPECIALIST Service History.

Reading this thread only confirms what I thought of the condition of Irish cars. Maintenance schedules and preventative maintenance are why you have periodical services based on mileage and age.

The required items for a service are stated in the maintenance manual. A Saab is not a Volkswagen or a Rover. Each car has its specific requirements, weaknesses and strengths. Bringing it to a general mechanic is in my opinion absolutely false economy.
I agree that on older cars quite a lot of work can be done DIY according to the likes of a Haynes manual, but on my last 2 cars I wouldnt touch them myself.
