Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Shouldn't say too much but I think few would disagree it's open and shut that it wasnt my fault. I was just hoping for some practical advice with regard to dealing with insurance, guards, assessors etc and all that other crap I have no idea about.

I'm expecting the bike will be written off going by the pictures but that's just my assumption at this stage.

Get reciepts for all your gear and get replacements.

Make sure you're fully checked out by the docs, would hate to have an injury flare up in a few months

The best advice I can give is to get a solicitor on your case as quickly as you can. Insurance companies make it as hard as they can for you to deal with them and if a car driver has written off your bike it will take ages to get it assessed and sorted if you process everything yourself. I hope you are ok and it all gets sorted quickly.

Never a truer word spoken. These things can and do drag on for years. At least you're still here to talk about it. Best of luck getting it all sorted.

Get a solicitor who's used to dealing with bike claims...They will tell you to get checked out by a doctor, even if you feel ok now..they'll also advise you on claiming for gear etc...

Just gone through this over the past year myself and its finally coming to a good conclusion.

PM me and I'll give you the details of the solicitor I use who specialise in this.

I had a small crash a few years ago. The other car driver admitted liability. I got an estimate for the damage, it was about €2,500, but it took ages for the insurance company to pay out. In the end I was ringing them every day! But as long as you're not injured that's the main thing, hope you're back riding soon. And back driving the bike too :)

Ditto on the professional to take a look at it. Either lawyer or your own insurance assessor. Otherwise you will spend ages getting the run around and loads of your time wasted.

    +1

It was a freak accident and it was absolutely miraculaous I wasn't killed let alone getting away without even broken bones. I'll be in pain and discomfort for a bit but I'm still smiling.

I'm lucky I have decent spare gear. All my main gear was cut off me. It's all ruined. Luckily too, I keep all these receipts always.

Went through the full A&E but I'm giving the GP a call tomorrow to make sure he's liking what he's hearing. That's good advice, thanks.

I think I'm resigned to the fact that it's a goner. My mechanic told me as much after seeing a pic. It's a shame. I'd just spent a mint getting it the way I wanted it including a full respray. It might happen though.

I still have the GSX1400 to keep me entertained thank God

Assuming I stay on the mend, I'll just want to get back to where it was, financially, as quickly as possible. In other words, I plan on keeping things as simple as possible.

Dont forget if the insurance company write off the bike you can still buy it back...you might be able to repair it yourself..especially if it of importance to you...;)

Thanks muchly, guys. There were way more ways of dying than surviving my accident. I have been randomly turning white as I think of other ways. I was definitely poxed.

I rang Adelaide today to inform them of the accident. I told them the other guy admitted liability and told me to file a claim and that he wouldn't be doing anything to hold things up. They basically said that the choice was to claim on my own fully comp in anticipation of them going after his insurance, or go directly after their insurance.

Claiming on mine for now means that I can negotiate for the bike but the gear and other expenses wouldn't be included although it would probably be quicker. If I go after his insurance company, I should get everything sorted but it might take longer or it might even take much longer.

Well as you've said you have spare gear and the GSX for the meantime maybe you should go after his company?

Either way best of luck getting sorted, glad you're alright.

If your insurance company writes off the bike you won't be able to insure it again, repaired or not.

it'll depend on the reason for the write off. It may be potientally road worthy, just uneconomical to repair

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 10,898 ✭✭✭✭seanybiker

I thought if you repair it and get an engineers report confirming its grand then you can put her back on the road.

In the Uk they have categories for insurance write offs. Here we don't so any vehicle can be put back on the road once you buy the wreck from the insurance company.

    I disagree.
Cat A and B cannot be bought back from the insurance company and have to be sent to a registered breakers.Cat C and D can.

2 years ago I had a cat B write off and couldnt buy it back and was informed of the law as above.

is it cat A has to be crushed altogether and cat B can be parted out,cat c can be repaired and put back on the road but will always be registered as a damaged repairable,,sure u can always buy a newer frame and swap the bits over and who will kno any different anyways,,and i tink the insurance companys willl sell u back the bike if u offer a better price than the breakers yard ,,its all about the moneys

I've never heard of Ireland having insurance category right offs? I did a quick search and have found this
Unfortunately on the Irish reports there is no categorisation of write offs. Some insurance companies will let you know the write off category if you investigate further.

    Did it change recently?

I've heard of loads of dodgy dealings with Irish insurance right offs due to our lax procedures for dealing with them

There is no government body or regulation to register and detail insurance write offs. But quite a few(not all) pay a third party private company that categorize's insurance writes offs and provides a database for search requests. Makes sense for business reasons.
