    Isn't it in May?

  • Registered Users Posts: 50 ✭✭jack157

My school received the material and equipment list yesterday so it must be soon enough.

It's in May. They have to give you time to prepare and for the school to get materials. Timber won't just magically appear in the woodwork room at the start of May.

This is not on until the start of May. The cutting list has just come out recently. There is a wide board this year, 90mm wide I think, so prepare for maybe awkward cutting/double dovetail/stopped housing or something along those lines maybe.

I'm nervous about this one. Didn't do Woodwork for Junior Cert and my Leaving Cert project has been pretty much one of my first experiences with it. We're doing a practice over Easter though so that might help.

We did last years project as a practice, so the hardest part for me was reading a drawing orther stuff was easy enough...when you get you pieces marked out there shouldn't be much problem doing it

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,216 ✭✭✭Ayrtonf7

Yeah ive heard one of the hardest things is actually reading the drawing. The actual manufacture of it is relativly easy as long as you prepare a little for it. If your one of the lucky ones who is doing there day exam late in the week, then who knows you may just magically find it online.

Anyways best advice for thos who are worried, take your time. Some examiners might acommodate slip-up...but I wouldnt bank on it.

Anyone know the exact sizes of timber for this years practical? I'm sure the teachers must know if they're ordering the timber and it's sitting in their room. Might get some to practise with if i know the sizes.

Your teacher would have got a cutting list of the sizes of timber that are needed.

    hello all,
the practical test takes place between the 2nd & 13th May. each school informs the SEC of which day(s) the exam is running on. a school may run it on more than one day if the number of students taking the exam is greater than the number of work spaces available (e.g. two classes but one room). the reason it is done like this is to allow each school flexibility to accommodate students doing more than one practical (e.g. engineering, art).

the cutting list has been sent to each school - this is it:

    Number L W T Material
    1 310 90 12 Red Deal
    1 260 75 12 Red Deal
    1 240 60 12 Red Deal
    1 310 44 18 Red Deal
    2 200 44 18 Red Deal

as mentioned above it is significantly different to previous years and appears to go back to the sort of material used before 2008. you will also note that there are no screws or dowel this year!

i am doing 2006 and 2010 with my class in preparation - i suggest you study these.

you can download the past ten years of practical exams as a single pdf here: www.constructionstudies.ie click on 'third level' then 'downloads' - it's at the bottom of the page - print it on A3 paper.
    best,

I found cutting list for 2011 and practical instructions for 2000-2010 but can't find cutting lists for any previous years ie cutting lists for 2000-2010.

Here's the cutting lists for 2006 and 2010. You can work the others out from the drawings:

    2006 No. L W T Material
    1 250 90 12 Red Deal
    1 210 90 12 Red Deal
    1 360 70 12 Red Deal
    1 270 30 12 Red Deal
    1 200 9 Dowel
    4 30 3.5 Screw

    2010 No. L W T Material
    1 220 44 18 Red Deal
    1 310 44 18 Red Deal
    1 300 30 18 Red Deal
    1 250 30 18 Red Deal
    2 220 30 18 Red Deal
    1 265 30 18 Red Deal
    1 260 30 18 Red Deal
    1 260 44 12 Red Deal
    1 130 9 Dowel
    4 30 3.5 Screw

You should make these first, then worry about this year's list and what might come up.

could be a stopped housing joint, ideal for wide pieces.. very simple joint to make
