Simple answer : Much bigger market. Roughly ten times that of the Irish market, handsets are bought in huge bulk, making for deeper discount from the manufacturers. Also, very different market dynamics, where many operators share masts and networks. For example T-Mobile, 3-UK and Orange run their 3G network as a 50-50 joint venture between EverythingEverywhere (T-Mobile and Orange) and H3G-UK. This makes running the network cheaper, which it needs to be, which allows for some profit and some good deals.

Look at US prices for phones and service, where they have to pay for IN and OUT bound calls and texts, data is about $40/month. Then moan about "rip-off"

If you want something to change, customers need to continue to move from o2 and Voda towards Meteor and 3 (and the MVNO's too)

It doesnt matter how much bigger the market is.

If the networks arent competitve they will always have low amount of customers.

Theres two ways of making money.

Extremely high quality of service and a high price or
    Good service and low price.

Today o2 hasnt got either of them
