A number of new honours degrees will be starting at Carlow IT’s main campus in September 2010. These include a BA in applied social studies — social care, and a BA in social and community studies. BScs in environmental science, sport science, and sports rehabilitation and athletic therapy are also starting and there will be a BEng in electronic systems. At the Wexford campus, three new honours degrees will start next year in applied social studies — social care, economic and social studies, and visual communications and design.

The number of graduates achieving a first or 2:1 improved to 57% last year, which is about average. But expansion of the course offering has led to a points fall for honours degrees, which has seen the institute slip down our league table. The graduate unemployment figure has leapt up to 8%, which is above the 6.3% national average. The dropout rate for honours degrees, at 23%, is relatively poor.

Work on a new student services building at the Carlow campus, to include a sports hall, gyms, sauna and meditation room, will get under way early next year.

About 60% of students come from Carlow and the surrounding counties and live at home. There are purpose-built privately-run student apartments near the campus and in town, although most students living away from home share houses in the town. First-years get lodgings, many of which have come down in price.

It has one of the country’s most highly developed sports and society programmes, with more than 60 clubs and societies, and has followed up its degree course in rugby with one in football.
Places at the Wexford and Carlow campuses are reserved each year for students who do not get the Leaving Certificate points required and are from disadvantaged backgrounds.

PRIVATE RENTS €60 to €90 per week

    STUDENT VIEW

    Kate Acheson, students’ union president:
First impressions The fantastic facilities and people to help settle students in.
Worst feature Having to get in early to grab one of the limited parking spaces.
Facilities Excellent. We have a modern, spacious library and canteen. There are good bus and rail services to and from Carlow town.
Deal clincher Great nightlife, and the campus feels like one big community.

Drop out rates are way lower this year. I wonder if they count deferrals in that too?????
