    Hi all
im a qualified intellectual disability nurse 10 years now. I have a full time permanent position but i am not 100% happy. I would like to return to study and do the higher diploma in childrens nursing associated with Trinity and AMNCH .

However if i do this further study there is no where in my current job to use these new skills i will have aquried.

The course starts in sept. i have to do an interview and be accepted onto the course . If successful the course is 52 weeks long with 12 weeks college based 36 weeks clinical based.

My main concern is i can take a career break from my current job. and go back after a few years but not necessarily to the same unit im working on.
BUT do i do this course ?
I live in Laois i will have to travel up to college each day ( i know i wont be the first )
But im married have mortgage bills etc and at the moment an 8 month old baby .
Is this too much pressure that im about to put on myself ???
And will there be a job in the area of childrens nursing when i finish ??
I do not have a huge family support around me but i have a very good childminder at the moment who is very reliable .
But when course starts daughter will be 15 months and 27 months when i finish .
will it be impossible to study and fit in family life etc. Husband works 6 days most weeks the odd week he can do 5 . He is supportive of me and encouraging me to do it .
Is it fair on my daughter ?

thanks any advice greatly appreciated from any other mature student with children who has taken the plunge

    Hi
Good for you thinking about stating a new direction, U should go for it if u can,u are not 100percen happy .I am wking in the field of nursing with children and adults with intellectual disability and I would love a career change. The opportunities is this area are very poor and limited promotions in clinical nurse speacialist positions. This is from my experience. Are thing going to change in this area.

    Hi there
nope i think things are not going to change and only get worse with the possibility of us loosing more "nursing positions " to social care roles.

ITs a hard one to call but things are not looking good at all !
